9M303.1 1
Known

• A bridge collapses

• Building under construction collapses

• Tool during cutting breaks

• Chair lifting load breaks

• Sailing ship sinks

9M303.1 2
Answer To These Questions

• Due to forces acting on the bodies

• Behavior of bodies due to forces

• Study of these forces & behavior of bodies is known as

Engineering Mechanics

9M303.1 3
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able to know

• The meaning of Engineering Mechanics

• Understand the importance of mechanics in Engineering

• Review the system of units used

9M303.1 4
Engineering Mechanics
Definition :
• Mechanics is the science which deals with effect of
forces on the bodies

• It is concerned with behavior of bodies that are acted

upon by the forces

• The behavior of body depends upon the applications

to the engineering problems

• Deals with the study of different laws of mechanics

9M303.1 5
Branches of Engineering Mechanics

9M303.1 6
Engineering Mechanics (contd.)

• STATICS :It is the branch of Engineering mechanics

which deals with effect of forces on the bodies which are
at rest
Ex :- load of the roof acting on pillars
• DYNAMICS: It is the branch of Engineering mechanics
which deals with effect of forces on the bodies which are
in motion
Ex:- load on bridge due to a moving truck

9M303.1 7
Units Of Measurement

• To measure any physical quantity “unit” is required . The

units are chosen arbitrarily

• A set of units is called a “ system of units”

• All the units are divided into two classes

1. Fundamental units

2. Derived units

9M303.1 8
Fundamental Units

• All physical quantities such as mass , length ,time are

called fundamental quantities

• Their units are called fundamental units

9M303.1 9
Fundamental units

Quantity Units Symbol

Length meter m
Mass kilogram kg
Time second s

9M303.1 10
Derived units

• All the units which can be expressed in terms of

fundamental units are called derived units

Ex :- unit of area = length * length = metre * metre = m2

volume = area * length (or) height = m2 * m = m3

9M303.1 11
