PROJECT BRIEF
• Vyalikaval is a locality in Bangalore City.
• It is surrounded by Palace Orchards, Guttahalli, Kodandarampura, Palace Guttahalli,
and Sankey road cross localities.
• Malleshwaram railway station is 2 km from Vyalikaval. It is 30 km from Bangalore
International Airport. It is connected by BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport
Corporation).
• it is known for having a large slum area. Slums are densely populated, informal
settlements with inadequate access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation,
and medical care. Residents of slums often live in substandard housing conditions
and face challenges related to poverty, unemployment, and limited educational
opportunities.
• The Indian government and various NGOs have made efforts to improve the living
conditions in slums through housing programs, education initiatives, and job training
programs. However, the issue of slums remains a complex and persistent challenge
in many cities in India and around the world.
HISTORY AND
BACKGROUND
• The slum arose due to rapid
urbanization, population growth, and
poverty, as people flock to cities in
search of work and better living
conditions. In many cases, slums
develop informally, without
government intervention or planning,
as people build homes on unused or
underutilized land. Over time, these
informal settlements can grow into
large, sprawling neighborhoods with
inadequate infrastructure and
services.
• The area’s history probably as a
place where horses were kept
• It was near the palace where people
were put up here,as servants and
gardeners
Intension of Project
• The intention of Vyalikaval slum, like most slums, was
likely to provide low-cost housing for people in need.
Slums often arise in response to a shortage of affordable
housing and a lack of access to basic services, and are
often inhabited by people who are unable to afford
housing in more formal, regulated areas of a city.
• In many cases, the residents of slums are attracted to
these areas by the promise of low-cost housing, proximity
to employment opportunities, or a desire to live close to
family or community networks. The development of slums
is often informal, with residents constructing makeshift
housing and services on land that is not officially
designated for residential use.

Morphology
• Vyalikaval is characterized by its densely
packed, informal settlement pattern, with
small and cramped living spaces, inadequate
basic services and infrastructure, and a lack
of access to clean water, sanitation and
waste management.
• The houses in the slum are usually made of
informal materials such as scrap metal,
cardboard and plastic, which are not
designed to withstand the forces of nature
and are prone to damage and collapse
during extreme weather events.
• The streets are often narrow, cluttered, and
poorly lit, making it difficult for people to
move around and access essential services.
Environmental
Impact
• The environmental impact of a slum like Vyalikaval can be
significant, as slums often lack basic infrastructure and
services, such as clean water, sanitation, and waste
management. This can result in negative impacts on both
the physical environment and human health.
• the overcrowded and cramped living conditions within a
slum can lead to increased risk of disease transmission,
as well as poor air and water quality. Additionally, the lack
of formal waste management systems can result in
unsanitary conditions and the pollution of nearby
waterways.
• Slums are also often located on land that is prone to
environmental hazards, such as flooding or landslides,
and residents may not have the resources or
infrastructure to protect themselves from these risks.
• The character of a place like Vyalikaval slum is often shaped by the social, economic, and cultural
conditions that exist within it. Slums are often characterized by poverty, informal housing, and a lack
of basic services and infrastructure, and residents are often drawn to these areas in search of
affordable housing or economic opportunities.
• The value of a place like Vyalikaval slum is often a complex and controversial issue, as it depends on
one's perspective and values. For many residents, the slum may represent a place of community,
belonging, and affordability in an otherwise expensive and rapidly gentrifying city. For others,
however, slums may be seen as areas of poverty, environmental degradation, and health risks.
CHARACTER OF THE PLACE,
VALUE OF THE PLACE, SENSE
OF THE PLACE AND
ARCHITECTURAL
IMPORTANCE
• The sense of place in a slum like Vyalikaval
is often shaped by the community and
cultural ties that exist within the slum, as
well as by the physical conditions and
environmental factors that exist within it.
Despite the challenges that residents face,
many slums are also characterized by
strong social networks and a sense of
community, which can be a source of
resilience and support for residents.
• In terms of architectural importance, slums
like Vyalikaval are often not considered
significant from an architectural perspective.
The informal and makeshift housing in these
areas is often constructed without formal
plans or building codes, and may not
conform to conventional ideas of good
design or quality construction. However,
some experts argue that the informal and
adaptive housing solutions found in slums
can offer important insights into sustainable
and low-cost housing solutions for urban
areas, and may be worthy of study and
preservation.
