Solving a real-life problem

using design thinking

methods
Overcoming waste management challenge
of Dhaka city residents
1. The design question:
How might we improve the waste
management system?

2. Impact we’re trying to have:

We want to ensure a safe and clean
environment around the city.
Continued
3. Possible solutions:
 Use a reusable bottle/cup for
beverages on-the-go
 Use reusable grocery bags, and
not just for groceries
 Waste segregation
 Purchase wisely and recycle
 Energy recovery
Continued
4. Some of the context and constraints we’re facing:
 About 5000 tons of waste is being generated in Dhaka
city every day among which only more than half
portion is properly collected and dumped.
 Lack of financial resources, inadequate trained
manpower, inappropriate technology and lack of
awareness of the community are some of the major
constraints that we might face solving the problem.
5. Original question needs a tweak, which is:
How might we improve the waste management system
while ensuring economic and social development?

Our Ultimate Solution
We're planning to introduce an app

User follows the waste segregation process

after collecting their waste, the user will receive points via the
app

They can earn financial incentives by redeeming their

points.

Financial incentives will be offered based on the

amount of recyclable waste generated by residents.
