What is CMM?

A device for measuring the physical geometrical characteristics

Determines the position of random spatial points and outputs them as coordinate
Manually controlled by an operator or it may be computer controlled.
Measurements are defined by a probe attached to this machine.
Probes may be mechanical, optical, laser, or white light, amongst others outputs them
as coordinates
Types of CMM

 Gantry Type
 Portable Type
 Bridge Type
 Cantilever Type
 Colum Type
Bridge Type CMM Basic Structure
Why CMM is required?
Problems with Conventional methods of measurement

 Accuracy
 Repeatability
 Manual operation
 Size restrictions
 Flexibility
 Can’t be employed on complex shaped
components
Demands placed on Modern Metrology
 Fast
 High accuracy & repeatability
 Automatic operation
Able to measure wide variety of dimensions
Flexibility in terms of shape & size of components
 Easy to operate
What a CMM can do?
 Derived data & evaluation
 Scanning functionality
 High accuracy
 Fast operations
 Computer controlled
 Programmable
Everything at one place
