ABSTRACT

The garlic stem and root cutting machine is a mechanical

device designed to efficiently remove the stems and roots of
garlic cloves. The machine is equipped with rotating blades that
are specifically designed to cut the roots and trimmer blades to
cut the stem, while leaving the cloves intact. This machine can
process a large number of garlic cloves in a short amount of
time, making it an ideal solution for commercial garlic
processing operations.
INTRODUCTION

Garlic is a widely used ingredient in many cuisines and is

known for its numerous health benefits. However, before garlic
can be used in cooking or for other purposes, the stems and roots
must be removed. This process can be time-consuming and labor-
intensive, especially for large quantities of garlic. To address this
challenge, the garlic stem and root cutting machine was
developed.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

The process of manually cutting the stems and roots off garlic
bulbs can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and inefficient,
particularly for large quantities of garlic. Additionally, the use of
manual labor can result in inconsistent cuts, leading to differences
in the size and appearance of garlic bulbs. This can be a
significant problem for commercial purposes where uniformity in
garlic size and appearance is essential. To address these
challenges, the garlic stem and root cutting machine was
developed.
OBJECTIVES

The objective of the garlic stem and root cutting machine is to

automate the process of cutting the stems and roots off garlic
bulbs, reducing the need for manual labor and increasing
efficiency and productivity in the garlic processing industry. The
machine aims to provide consistent quality of garlic bulbs for
various applications by ensuring uniformity in the size and
appearance of the garlic bulbs.
METHODLOGY

The development of a garlic stem and root cutting machine

involves several stages of methodology. These stages may include:

RESEARCH

DESIGN

PROTOTYPING

TESTING

Refining
MANUAL METHOD

The manual method of cutting the stems and roots off garlic
bulbs involves using a knife or scissors to trim the stems and roots
by hand. The process typically involves holding the garlic bulb in
one hand and using the other hand to cut off the stem and root
close to the bulb. This process can be time-consuming and labor-
intensive, particularly for large quantities of garlic. Moreover,
manual cutting can result in inconsistent cuts, leading to
differences in the size and appearance of garlic bulbs, which can
be a significant problem for commercial purposes.
PROPOSED METHOD

Our machine uses dual mechanism

Hedge cutting Mechanism to cut the garlic stem.

And

Garlic roots are removed by rotating blades.

Which is fabricated into one structure.

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF
PROPOSED MACHINE
• The design and fabrication of a proposed garlic stem and root cutting machine
involve several stages, including :
• Conceptual design: The conceptual design involves developing a rough idea
of the machine's features, specifications, and functionalities based on the objectives
and requirements of the garlic processing industry.
• Detailed design: The detailed design involves creating a detailed plan for the
machine's construction, including 2D and 3D models, mechanical drawings, and
electrical schematics. The design should consider factors such as the size and shape
of garlic bulbs, the desired cutting speed, and the materials used in construction.
• Prototype development: A prototype of the garlic stem and root cutting
machine is developed to test its functional.
• Fabrication: Once the design is finalized, the fabrication of the garlic stem
and root cutting machine can begin. This involves the construction of the machine's
frame, conveyor belt, cutting station, and other components using high-quality
materials and equipment Assembly and installation

COMPARSION OF MANUAL AND
PROPOSED METHOD
A comparison of the manual method and the proposed method of using a garlic stem and root cutting machine
reveals several differences and advantages:
Efficiency and productivity: The proposed method of using a garlic stem and root cutting machine is much
more efficient and productive than the manual method. The machine can cut the stems and roots off garlic bulbs at
a much faster rate than can be achieved by hand, reducing the need for manual labor and increasing productivity.
Consistency and uniformity: The garlic stem and root cutting machine can ensure consistent cuts, leading
to uniformity in the size and appearance of garlic bulbs, which is essential for commercial purposes. In contrast,
the manual method can result in inconsistent cuts, leading to differences in the size and appearance of garlic bulbs.
Safety and hygiene: The garlic stem and root cutting machine is safer and more hygienic than the manual
method, as it reduces the risk of injury and contamination associated with handling garlic bulbs by hand.
Cost: While the initial cost of purchasing and installing a garlic stem and root cutting machine may be higher than
the cost of using the manual method, the machine's long-term benefits, including increased productivity,
consistency, and reduced labor costs, can outweigh the initial investment.
Scalability: The garlic stem and root cutting machine can be used in a variety of settings, including large
commercial kitchens, food processing facilities, and small-scale garlic farms, making it scalable to different
operations. The manual method may be more limited in its scalability due to its reliance on manual labor.
In summary, the proposed method of using a garlic stem and root cutting machine offers several advantages
over the manual method, including increased efficiency, consistency, safety, hygiene, and scalability, making it an
attractive option for the garlic processing industry.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The result of using the proposed garlic stem and root cutting machine is highly satisfactory, as it
offers a faster, more efficient, and safer method of processing garlic bulbs. The machine's design and
construction allow for consistent, precise cuts to be made, resulting in uniform garlic bulbs, making it
an attractive option for commercial and industrial processing. The machine's high-speed cutting
blades can effectively remove garlic stems and roots, and the conveyor belt allows for a continuous
flow of garlic bulbs to be processed, significantly increasing productivity. The machine's safety
features, such as safety guards and emergency stop buttons, ensure that operators are protected from
injury during use. In terms of maintenance, the garlic stem and root cutting machine is relatively easy
to clean and maintain, as the machine's components are made of high-quality, durable materials that
are resistant to rust and corrosion. Routine maintenance can be carried out by trained personnel to
ensure optimal performance and longevity. Overall, the proposed garlic stem and root cutting
machine offers significant advantages over the manual method, including increased productivity,
consistency, safety, hygiene, and scalability. Its design and construction allow for efficient processing
of garlic bulbs, making it an attractive option for the garlic processing industry. The machine's
effectiveness and reliability make it a valuable addition to any garlic processing facility, large or
small.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the use of a garlic stem and root cutting machine offers significant
advantages over the manual method of processing garlic bulbs. The machine's design
and construction allow for fast, efficient, and consistent removal of garlic stems and
roots, resulting in uniform garlic bulbs that meet the standards of the commercial
market. The proposed garlic stem and root cutting machine offers numerous benefits,
including increased productivity, consistency, safety, hygiene, and scalability. These
advantages make the machine an attractive option for the garlic processing industry,
as it can significantly reduce labor costs, improve efficiency, and enhance product
quality. While the initial cost of purchasing and installing the garlic stem and root
cutting machine may be higher than the cost of using the manual method, its long-
term benefits, including increased productivity and reduced labor costs, can
outweigh the initial investment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the garlic stem
and root cutting machine is a valuable addition to any garlic processing facility and
can significantly improve the garlic processing industry's efficiency and profitability.
