REFLECTIVE

TEACHING
What is Reflection?

● Reflection is a meta-cognitive strategy

that helps teachers to think critically
upon their experiences, actions and
decisions during their teaching practices.

2
Reflective Teaching

● Reflective teaching is a process where teachers think over

their teaching practices, analyzing how something was taught
and how the practice might be improved or changed for better
learning outcomes.
● Reflective teaching is a means of “looking at what you do in the
classroom, thinking about why you do it, and thinking about if it
works – a process of elf-observation and self-evaluation” (Tice,
2011).

3
Teacher’s Reflection

- Did things go as planned?

- What went well?
- What could be improved?
- Was preparation adequate?
- Were objectives fulfilled?
- Was the lesson relevant to the objectives?
- Were students motivated an interested?

4
Why do teachers need to reflect?

1. Improve teaching practice

2. Enhance student learning
3. Increase self-awareness
4. Promote professional development

STRATEGIES/APPROACHES

Reflective Peer
Diary Observation

Student’s Recording a
Feedback lesson

8
Reflective Diary
• A reflective diary is a tool that teachers can use
to engage in reflective teaching. It is a personal
record that documents a teacher's thoughts,
feelings, and experiences related to their teaching
practice.

• Teachers can use a reflective diary to reflect on

their experiences and gain new insights into their
teaching practice. This can include reflecting on
what worked well, what did not work well, and how
to improve. 9
Peer Observation

• Invite a colleague to come into your class to collect

information about your lesson.

• Peer observation is a reflective teaching strategy

where teachers observe and provide feedback to
one another.

10
Recording a Lesson

• Video or audio recordings of lessons can provide

very useful information for reflection.

• Teachers can use video recording to capture their

teaching and reflect on their instructional
strategies, student engagement, and classroom
management.

11
Student’s Feedack
• Teachers can gather feedback from students
about their teaching practices, classroom
dynamics, and learning experiences, and use this
feedback to improve their teaching.
• Ask your students what they think about what goes
on in the classroom. Their opinions and perceptions
can add a different and valuable perspective.
• This can be done through simple questionnaires.

12
Advantages of Reflective Teaching
• Professional growth
• Give scope for innovation
• Facilitates ways for teaching
• Bosst student-teacher relationship
• Instill interest in the lesson
• Make problem solving easy

13
Disadvantages

• Not all teachers can under the process

easily.
• Some teachers may be uncomfortable
evaluating their performance
• Could be time consuming.
• The teachers may have confusion about
which aspects to reflect on.

14
Dewey belived that teachers should take time to
reflect on their observations, knowledge, and
experiences so that they can effectively nurture
each child’s learning.
