WHAT IS FOOD PRODUCTION?

STUDY OF FOOD PRODUCTION IS CALLED AGRONOMY

AS THE NAME SUGGEST IT MEANS BY PRODUCING FOOD. IT ALSO MEANS TO INCREASE YEILD OF FOOD
PRODUCED WITH INCREASING POPULATION THEREFORE INCREASING OF FOOD PRODUCTION IS MUST.

THERE ARE SEVERAL METHOD TO ACCOMPLISH THIS :


1. AGRICULTURE MACHINERY : USING OF MACHINERY TO REPLACE HUMAN LABOUR IMPROVING
EFFICIENCY BY FARMING IN MUCH LARGER AREA OF LAND
2.AGRICULTURE CHEMICALS: USING OF CHEMICALS LIKE FERTILIZERS,INSECTICIDES AND PECTICIDES
3.SELECTIVE BREEDING: SELECTING BEST BREEDS OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS WHICH PRODUCE HIGHER
YEILD. CROSSING THEM CAN HAVE OFFSPRINGS WITH SAME BUT ENHANCED QUALITY PRODUCTION
MONOCULTURE AND ITS DISADVANTAGES
 MONOCULTURE IS PRODUCTION OF SAME SPECIES OF CROP GROWN IN A LARGE AREA
HOWEVER WITH THIS A CROP QUANTITY MIGHT INCREASE BUT IT TOO INCLUDES SEVERAL DRAWBACKS:
 LOW BIODIVERSITY: BIODERVISTY NUMBER OF SPECIES IN AN AREA.
USUALLY MANY SPECIES ARE GROWN IN AN AREA BUT MEANING IT HAS HIGH DIFFERNCES BETWEEN
INDIVIDUALS HOWEVER ONCE SPECIES MEANS LOW BIODIVERSITY ( NO DIFFERENCES IN INDIVIDUALS)
 RESISTANCE OF PESTS : WHEN SPRAYED WITH INSECTICIDES. SOME PESTS OFTEN BECOME RESISTANCE TO
THEM .
 KILLING OF USEFUL BACTERIA
 HARMING FOOD CHAIN
INTENSIVE FOOD PRODUCTION AND ITS IMPACT

 INTENSIVE FARMING IS ACHIEVED WHEN MONOCULTURE IS DONE IN EXCESS AMOUNT HENCE HAVING
NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE ECOSYSTEM THIS INCLUDES:

 DEFORESTATION: AS THE AMOUNT OF CROPS PRODUCED IS INCREASED HUGE AMOUNT OF LAND IS


REQUIRED THEREFORE FORESTS ARE CUT DOWN TO PROVIDE SPACE.
 INCREASE IN GLOBAL WARMING: MORE NUMBER OF CATTLE PRODUCE MORE METHANE GAS WHICH
CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL WARMING.
 BACTERIAL RESISTANCE:AS ANTIBIOTICS ARE FED TO CROPS AND INSECTICIDES ARE USED BACTERIA GAIN
RESISTANCE TO THEM IF USED TOO FREQUENTLY.
 SOIL EROSION: OVERGRAZING CAN LEAD TO SOIL EROSION REDUCING ABILITY FOR PLANTS TO GROW.
WORLD FOOD SUPPLY

ALTHOUGH FOOD IS MADE IN HUGE QUANTITY IN SOME COUNTRIES. IN OTHERS ITS


NOT WHICH LEADS TO FAMINE.

THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY:


• DROUGHTS.
• FLOODS.
• UNEQUAL FOOD DISTRIBUTION.
• POVERTY.
• INCREASING POPULATION.
