A gearwheel pump, also known as a gear pump, is a
type of positive displacement pump that uses a pair of
interlocking gears to pump fluid or gases by trapping
them between the gear teeth and the pump casing. Gear
pumps are commonly used for low-to-medium pressure
application, such as in lubrication systems. They can
handle both viscous and non-viscous fluids, and known
for their high efficiency and reliability.
Gearwheel pumps are characterized by
specific components and design features that
make them well-suited for marine application.
These pumps employ intermeshing gears with
carefully machined external teeth. These
gears typically made of durable materials
such as stainless steel or bronze, are mounted
or separate shafts and rotate within a robust
marine environment, constructed from
materials resistant to corrosion and capable of
handling the pressure. Gearwheel pumps are
driven by external power source such as
electric motors or engine.
Parts of Gearwheel Pumps
Suction Port – Allows fluid to enter the pump
Case – Encloses internal components of the pump
Drive Shaft – Transmit power to the gears
Seal – Prevents fluid leakage
Mounting Flange- Provides stability and support
Pressure Port – Discharges pressurize fluid from the pump
Bushings – Support and guide rotating shaft
Idler Gear – Transfer rotational motion from the drive gear to cause fluid
displacement
Case Cover – Prevents debris from entering and protect internal components
Case Seal – Creates tight seal to prevent fluid leakage
Drive Gear – Receives power from the drive shaft and transfer motion to
cause fluid displacement
Functions of Gearwheel Pumps
Intake fluid through a suction port
Enclose fluid within a pump case
Transmit power through a drive shaft
Prevents fluid leakage with a seal
Ensure installation and stability with a mountain flange
Discharge pressurized fluid through a pressure port
Support components with bushing
Facilitate fluid displacement with an idler gear and drive gear
Protect internal components with a case cover and a case seal
Conclusion
Gearwheel pumps are crucial for reliable fluid transfer in various applications.
They play a significant role in lubrication systems, fuel transfer systems, and
hydraulic systems.
Gearwheel pumps ensure efficient fluid movement, enabling smooth operation.
In conclusion, gearwheel pumps are vital components that enable dependable and
efficient fluid transfer across a range of applications.
