OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

a. Define the effects of Climate Change, Energy Crisis

and Environmental Awareness in the society
b. Identify the importance of Climate Change, Energy
Crisis and Environmental Awareness.
c. Analyze the human issues in order to reflect the
Environmental Awareness.

The environment
gives us countless
ENVIRONMENT
benefits that we
can't repay our
entire life.

Is everything that is around us. Environment or natural world encompasses

all living and non-living things occurring naturally, meaning in this
case not artificial.
CLIMATE CHANGE
 Refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather
patterns. These changes could be caused by natural
processes, such as through variations in the solar cycle.

 Human activities have been the main driver of climate

change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil
and gas.

 the average weather conditions in a place over a long

period of time—30 years or more. And as you probably
already know, there are lots of different types of climates
on Earth.
According to the US Geological Survey, global
warming is just one aspect of climate change. In fact,
they say that global warming refers to the rise in
global temperatures due mainly to the increasing
concentrations of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.

On the other hand, climate change refers to the

increasing changes in the measures of climate over a
long period of time – including precipitation,
temperature, and wind patterns.

NASA also define Climate Change as “a broad range

of global phenomena created predominantly by
burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases
to Earth’s atmosphere. These phenomena include the
increased temperature trends described by global
warming, but also encompass changes such as sea-
level rise; ice mass loss in Greenland, Antarctica, the
Arctic and mountain glaciers worldwide; shifts in
flower/plant blooming; and extreme weather events.”

“Pollution and climate change by

excessive burning of fossil fuels
are real threats, not the people
who warn that we must take these
threats seriously.”

Broadcaster

The greenhouse effect is the way in which

heat is trapped close to Earth's surface by
“greenhouse gases.” These heat-trapping
gases can be thought of as a blanket wrapped
around Earth, keeping the planet toastier than
it would be without them. Greenhouse gases
include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous
oxides, and water vapor.

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE Next

 Generating Power
Generating electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels causes a large chunk of global
emissions.

 Manufacturing Goods
Manufacturing and industry produce emissions, mostly from burning fossil fuels to produce
energy for making things like cement, iron, steel, electronics, plastics, clothes, and other
goods.

 Cutting Down Forests

Cutting down forests to create farms or pastures, or for other reasons, causes emissions,
since trees, when they are cut, release the carbon they have been storing.

 Using Transportation
-Most cars, trucks, ships, and planes run on fossil fuels.
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE Next

 Producing Food
Producing food causes emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases
in various ways.

 Powering Buildings
Globally, residential and commercial buildings consume over half of all electricity.

 Consuming Too Much

Your home and use of power, how you move around, what you eat and how much you throw
away all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

 Hotter temperatures
As greenhouse gas concentrations rise, so does the global surface temperature.

 More severe storms

Destructive storms have become more intense and more frequent in many regions.

 Increased drought
Climate change is changing water availability, making it scarcer in more regions.

 A warming, rising ocean

The ocean soaks up most of the heat from global warming.

 Loss of species
-Climate change poses risks to the survival of species on land and in the ocean.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

 Not enough food

Changes in the climate and increases in extreme
weather events are among the reasons behind a global
rise in hunger and poor nutrition.

 More health risks

Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing
humanity.

 Poverty and displacement

Climate change increases the factors that put and keep
people in poverty.

In order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental

Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says we must reduce carbon emissions to
the point where we hold global warming to no more than an additional 1.5
°C (~3 °F). To do that, we must as a planet commit ourselves to reaching
net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

If we do not take further action to stop climate impacts we’re already

experiencing, the planet is likely to see global temperatures rise by 2-4 °C
(3-7 °F) by the end of the century. This type of warming could lead to
catastrophic melting of the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, causing
sea level rise that would flood most major global coastal cities.

ENERGY CRISIS

It is usually defined as any significant

shortage in energy supply to a country or
region. More specifically, the term is used
to refer to a shortage of a specific energy
source at a specific time in a specific
place.
VARIOUS CAUSES OF THE
GLOBAL ENERGY CRISIS
1. Over consumption
2. Overpopulation
3. Poor Infrastructure
4. Unexplored Renewable Energy
Options
5. Delay in Commissioning of
Power Plants
6. Wastage of Energy
7. Poor Distribution System

ENVIRONMENTAL
AWARENESS
 means being aware of the natural
environment and making choices that
benefit the earth, rather than hurt it.
 can help to minimize pollution and global
warming.
 can lead to a more sustainable world by
promoting renewable resources such as
solar, wind, and water.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 OIL DRILING
This causes rises in global temperatures which results in climate change.

 DEFORESTATION
Causes wildlife and biodiversity extinction because the loss of habitat
threatens many species’ existence.

 PRODUCTION OF PLASTIC GOODS

-Made of materials that might take hundreds of years to decompose.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 OCEAN POLLUTION
A combination of chemicals and trash, most of which comes from land sources
and is washed or blown into the ocean.

 GLOBAL WARMING
The phenomenon of increasing average air temperature near the surface of
Earth over the past one to two centuries.

 RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Refers to the aggressive increase of population.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN IDEAS
Plastic Glass Paper Metal

1.Unplug the appliances: when not in use.

2.Promote organic food: for healthy and chemical-free food.
3.Ban plastic – prefer paper bags that can be recycled.
4.Promote renewable energy uses and their applications.
5.We should prefer more walking and driving less – to save fuel and energy.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN IDEAS
Plastic Glass Paper Metal

6.Education for poor people – Ultimately benefits the environment.

7.Promote animal’s protection and care – They have equal rights like us to use earth’s
resources.
8.Afforestation and reforestation: Planting trees are the key to resolve every earth’s problem.
9.Proper waste disposal campaign: It will reduce major kinds of pollution, i.e., air, water, land.
10.Stop wasting water – Use bucket wherever possible.
