and another substance at a
very high temperature.

requirement to install an automatic fire
suppression system in the building after it was

Essential Elements of Fire

What is HEAT?
• Heat is energy that
flows from an object of
high temperature to an
object of low
temperature.
• Flashpoint - lowest
temperature material
produces sufficient
vapors to burn
What is FUEL?
• It is any solid, liquid, or gaseous substance that can be
burned.
• Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of solid fuels
which produces gas fuel through the application of heat.
• Vaporization is the production of fuel gases from liquid
fuels.
What is OXIDATION?
It is a chemical process where there is a loss of
electrons. Oxidation happen ordinary like rusting of
iron or metabolism of food in our bodies.

• An oxidizing agent is an element or a compound

which releases oxygen or other oxidizers during a
chemical reaction.
• Burning could actually occur in the absence of
oxygen as long other oxidizing agents are
present.
• Examples of other oxidizing agents are bromates,
bromine, chlorates, chlorine, fluorine, iodine,
nitrates, nitric acid, nitrites, perchlorates,
peroxides, and permanganates.
What is an UNINHABITABLE CHEMICAL
CHAIN REACTION ?
• Combustion or burning—an exothermic reaction —
becomes self-sustained because the heat given
during combustion is used again to heat the fuel and
maintain the burning.
• The initial ignition source is no longer necessary and
the fire continues unless it becomes deprived of one
of the main elements.

of the Fire Code of the Philippines of 2008 (RA 9514).
• Install fire safety features at home and in workplace.
Check them regularly. Always keep a fire safety kit.
• Inspect your house to be sure that is free from fire
hazard.
• Develop an escape plan for the different areas at
home or office.
• Participate in and take drills seriously.
• STOP, DROP, and ROLL
• Know the number of your local fire department or
emergency hotlines.
• Know signs of an impending fire hazard
• Unplug appliances when not in use.
Fire Safety Precautions
What to do During
• Follow the escape and fire drill plans.
• Do not open a door that feels hot or has smoke coming
out from underneath the door or around the door frame.
• Call the local fire department
• If you must escape through smoke, get low and go
under the smoke to the exist. Close the door behind you.
• Do not use the elevators, use the stairs instead.
• If smoke, heat, or flame blocks your exist routes, stay in
the room with the doors closed. Place a towel under the
door. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth
or flashlight to signal for help.
• Once outside, stay away from the source of fire.
Fire Safety Precautions
What to do During
• If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop, and
roll. If someone cannot stop, drop, and roll,
cover the flame with a blanket or towel.
• RACE (Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Evacuate)
and PASS (pull the pin, aim at the base of the
fire, squeeze the operating handle, sweep
from side to side).
• Rescue the people who are in immediate
danger. Alert authorities by calling the local fire
department.
Fire Safety Precautions
What to do After
• Be sure that all injured individuals
are treated by the doctor.
• Do not return to the building until
given advisory by the fire authorities.
• Pay attention to how you and your
loved ones are experiencing and
