WETLAND
Wetlands are a vital part of our environment becauseThey
are home to plants and animals that aren’t found any where
else in the world. These landscape provide food, clean water
and protection for humans plants and animals a like .
Wetlands include mangroves peat lands and marshes rivers
and lakes ,Delta’s ,flood plains and flooded forest rice field
and ever coral reefs.
WHAT ARE WETLANDS
Wetlands are areas containing a large body of water sub
merging or surrounding areas of land . Wetlands or
saturation caused seasonolly . Wetlands are distinguished
by vegetation , bodies of water and soi
conditions of the area .
MAJOR THREATS OF WETLAND
1. Draining of wetland to make space for agriculture or
construction work is one of the biggest threats to such
areas.
2. Like all other habitats, wetlands, are also suffering from
climate change induced alternations in environment.
3. Wetlands are threats as the dumping grounds where
industrial enfluents house hold Wastes or sewage is
relesed.
4. Population growth,over consumption,over exploitation,
pollution and deforestation.
MANAGEMENT OF WETLAND
Wetland management generally involves activities
that can be conducted with in and around wetlands
both natural and man made to protect restore
manipulate or provide for their function and values.
The management of wetlands and their use for
water quality purpose has resulted in the
Introduction of anumber of terms.
MAJOR CAUSES OF WETLAND LOSS
 Road and bridges :-roads and bridges are frequently b
constructed across wetlands .since wetlands have low land
value. It is often considered to become more cost effective to
built roads or ridges across wetland than around them .roads can
impound a wetland, even of culverts are used.
 Industry:- adverse effects of industry on wetlands can include
reduction of wetland acreage, alteration of wetland hydrology
due to industrial water in take and discharge water temperature
increases point and non point, source pollutant in puts,pH
changes as a result of discharges and atmospheric despoition.
 Agriculture:- excessive amount of fertilizers and animal
waste reaching wetlands in runoff agricultural operations
including confined animal facilities can cause eutrofication.
 Toxic compounds:- untreated runoff containing extremely
high concentrations of selenium led to mortally and
deformities in bird, amphibian and fish embryos and the
disappearance of species from wetlands.
 Mining:- Acid drainage from active and abandaned mines
causes extensive ecological damage. Acid mine drainage
introduces high level of acidity and heavy metals through
runoff and through direct drainage from in wetlands.
 Ampathy of the people:- due to the rapid growth of the
Population waste production from the house hold also
increases people throw their waste around the source of
water and the waste throw to the wetlands plays a vital role
in the degradation of wetlands.
IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVATION OF
WETLANDS
 Wetlands is a transitional zone of land ecosystem and
aquatic ecosystem.wetland provide shelter and food for
living things. It helps to sustain various ecosystem.
 The quality of the wetlands had been degrading due to the
lack of management in forestry, urbanization,
industrialization and awarness of the people.
 Wetlands are crucial for food production such as rice,
vegetables,fish etc..
 Wetlands helps in conserving the biodiversity as different
plant species of wetland provide habitat for varied animal
communities.
 Wetlands provide many opportunities for recreational
activities such bird watching, hunting, fishing, trapping and
hiking. They also provide educational opportunities for
nature studies and scientific research.
HOW TO PROTECT A WETLAND

1. Volunteer to remove to litter from your local wetlands

2. Plants, trees, shrubs and flowers that are native to where
you live.
3. Donat to organizations that focus on wetlands operations.
4. Observe park rules when visiting a wetland for fun.
5. Reduce, reuse and recycle your waste and trash.
6.Ensure all papers and recycled products in your
home are unbleached.
7.Dispose of your house hold cleaning products
responsibily
8. Avoid applying lawn or garden Chemicals on
Windly or rainy days.
9. Use laundry and dishwasher detergents that are
Phosphate free.
CONCLUSION

Wetlands are unique,productive ecosystems where

terrestrial and aquatic habitats meets . Wetlands plays a
critical role in maintaining many natural cycles and
supporting a wide range of biodiversity.
