WHAT IS FOLK DANCE?

•A folk dance is a dance developed by people that reflect the

life of the people of a certain country or region. Not all
ethnic dances are folk dances. For example, ritual dances or
dances of ritual origin are not considered to be folk dances.
Ritual dances are usually called “Religious dances” because
of their purpose.

TINIKLING
TINIKLING

• Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which

originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance
involves at least two people beating, tapping, and
sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each
other in coordination with one or more dancers who
step over and in between the poles in a dance.
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND TINIKLING?

• The dance originated in Leyte. It was created in the

likeness of how the tikling birds walk and jump over
branches as well as dodge traps set by farmers with its
long stilt-like legs. An urban legend also says that the
dance was a form of punishment during the Spanish
