Coconut is an important crop for India, where it is the third largest producer globally after Indonesia and Philippines. India has over 1.5 million hectares dedicated to coconut production yielding over 10,000 million nuts annually. Kerala produces nearly half of India's coconut crop. Coconuts are classified botanically and grow on the coconut palm, known for its various useful products. The coconut industry faces challenges like low productivity from old trees as well as damage from typhoons and insect infestations like coconut scale.

India and presently covers 1.5 million ha in this country with a total production of over 10000 million nuts. India stands 3rd in production in the world after Indonesia and Philippines, although has a potential of much higher production from the existing area. Coconuts were first domesticated by the Austronesian peoples in Island Southeast Asia and were spread during the Neolithic via their seaborne migrations as far east as the Pacific Islands, and as far west as Madagascar and the Comoros. India rank 3rd in the world on production of
coconut after Indonesia and Philippines but India rank 1st in the productivity in the world. Kerala share coconut production highest(45%) followed by Tamil Nadu(22%), Karnataka(12%) in India. SCIENTIFIC AND CLASSIFICATION Kingdom Plantae (unranked) Angiosperms (unranked) Monocots Order Commelinids Family Arecaceae Subfamily Arecoideae Tribe Cocoeae Genus Cocos Species C. nucifera Binomial Name Cocos nucifera L. The coconut palm is often regarded as one of nature's most valuable and beautiful plants. Coconut products, such as oils, fibre, and even charcoal, are widely used in consumer products such as soap, cosmetics, foods, and medications today. The coconut palm is one of the most extensively produced palms globally. • Coconut is high in fiber and low in carbs, so it helps control blood sugar levels in our bodies. • Coconut meat and water contain numerous antioxidants that fight against factors causing cell damage. • The raw white meat inside a coconut is referred to as the kernel. It has a firm texture and delicious, slightly sweet flavor antioxidant also reduces the risk of many diseases such as cancer. • Coconut milk and cream are made by pressing the raw, grated meat. • Dried coconut meat is usually grated or shaved and used in cooking or baking. It can be further processed and ground into flour. • Production of coconut (with husk) from October to December 2022 was recorded at 4.24 million metric tons. This was higher by 1.0 percent from its level of 4.20 million metric tons in the same period of last year. • Davao Region was the top coconut-producing region during the quarter, which contributed 565.36 thousand metric tons output or 13.3 percent to the total coconut production. This was followed by Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula with contributions of 11.7 percent and 11.3 percent shares, respectively. • From July to December 2022, area planted with coconut was noted at 3.59 million hectares, indicating a decrease of -0.7 percent from the previous year’s same period area of 3.62 million hectares. The coconut industry has experienced various challenges ranging from low production to natural calamities and pest infestations. Certain studies pointed to low productivity being caused by old and senile coconut trees. On the other hand, historical disasters, specifically typhoons Pablo and Yolanda in 2012 and 2013, also instigated massive damages on coconut farms and other key players within the coconut supply chain. The industry further faced numerous infestations from coconut scale insects (CSI), locally known as cocolisap, which were first observed in 2010. The cocolisaps feed on the leaves, fruits and flowers of the coconut tree leaving only the trunk. This disables the production of coconuts, and the remaining use of the tree would simply be as coco-lumber. Although replanting of coconut trees is the immediate solution for the abovementioned problems, it will still take several years for them to reach the optimum maturity for production.
