People use energy to walk and ride a bicycle, to

move cars along roads and boats through water, to
cook food on stoves, to make ice in freezers, to light
our homes and offices, to manufacture products, and to
send astronauts into space.
2 TYPES OF
ENERGYO

POTENTIAL KINETIC
ENERGY ENERGY
-stored energy -working energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of a moving
object.
Velocity is the speed of a moving object in
a particular direction.
Mass is the amount of matter container
within an object.
Work is a force acting on an object in the
direction of motion.
POTENTIAL ENERGY

is the energy stored within an object, due to

the object's position, arrangement or state.
A rock sitting on the
edge of a cliff. If the
rock falls, the
potential energy will
be converted to
kinetic energy, as the
rock will be moving.
A stretched elastic
string in a longbow.
When the elastic
string is released, it
will cause the arrow
to shoot forward.
A sparkler. The
chemical potential
energy in a sparkler
will be released when
the top of the stick is
lit.
The food we eat. Food
contains chemical
potential energy – as
our bodies digest it, the
stored energy is
converted into energy
for us to move and
grow.
*Kinetic energy is the energy of mass (an
object) in motion (moving).

*The faster an object is moving, the more kinetic

energy it has.

*Any object that is moving has kinetic energy –

the moving object has energy because of its
motion.

FORMS OF
ENERGY
1. Thermal or Heat energy
-comes from the movement of
atoms and molecules in a
substance.

Geothermal energy
-thermal energy in the earth.
*The faster
they move,
the more
energy they
possess and
the hotter
they
become.
FORMS OF
ENERGY
2. Chemical energy- energy
stored in the bonds of atoms
and molecules.
EXAMPLES:
Batteries, biomass,
petroleum, natural gas, food
and coal
EXAMPLE:
Chemical energy is converted to
thermal energy when people burn
wood in a fireplace or burn gasoline in
a car's engine.
FORMS OF
ENERGY
3. Electrical energy is the
movement of electrons

EXAMPLE: Lightning
Electrons that
move through a
wire are called
electricity.
FORMS OF
ENERGY
4. Sound is energy moving
through substances in
longitudinal waves produced
when a force makes an object
or substance vibrate.
FORMS OF
ENERGY
5. Gravitational Energy
associated with a gravitational
field, like the one that
surrounds the Earth

Ex. Riding a bike uphill and

downhill

6. Nuclear Energy
– stored inside tiny
atoms that are
invisible, but make up
the elements of the
entire universe.
FORMS OF
ENERGY
*Nuclear energy is released when
atoms join together (fusion) or split
(fission).

7. Solar (radiant) energy –
energy that comes from the
movement of light

Examples :visible light,

x-rays, gamma rays,
sunshine
FORMS OF
ENERGY
8. Mechanical energy – stored in objects
by tension. When the tension is released,
motion occurs.
Examples: compressed spring , stretched
rubber band
