CHAPTER 8

DETERMINING SAMPLE SIZE

SLOVIN’S FORMULA

• is used to calculate the sample size (n) given the

population size (N) and the margin of error (e). It is a
random sampling technique formula to estimate
sampling size.

Where:
n = a sample size
N = population size
e = desired margin of error (standard is 5% or 0.05)
Example #1
For instance, in your research, if the population is 1000 and the margin of error
you allow is 5%, what is your representative sample.

GIVEN: N= 1000 SOLVE: n

e= 0.05

Using the Slovin’s Formula.

Subtitute all the given.
However, our sample size is 286.

Example #2
A researcher wants to study the academic performance in mathematics of
students in a certain school. The school has a population of 1200 students. If
the researcher allows a margin of error of 5% how many students must be
include in his shape?
GIVEN: N= 1200 SOLVE: n
e= 0.05

Using the Slovin’s Formula.

Subtitute all the given.

  However, our sample size is 300.

Likert Scale

is a psychometric scale commonly involved in

research that employs questionnaires. It is the most
widely used approach to scaling responses in survey
research. The scale is named after its inventor,
psychologist Rensis Likert.
The format of a typical five level likert item,
for example could be:
1. Strongly disagree
2. Disagree
3. Neither agree nor disagree
4. Agree
5. Strongly agree
Average Weighted Mean – is used to calculate the outcome of a
survey that was conducted to determine the views of the
respondents.
The following formula is used to calculate the AWM:

Where: AWM – Average weighted mean Likert Scale:

TWM – Total weighted mean
n – number of respondents
p – percentage
