ADAPTATION AND

SURVIVAL OF
ORGANISMS IN
CHANGING
ENVIRONMENT
WHY O WHY???
Why are there so many living organisms on
Earth, and so many different species?
Why are there species that live on certain
regions only?
Why do these species continue to live?
Why do these species different
morphological and physiological
characteristics?
PICTURE PARADE : What organisms exist?
ECOSYSTEM
The ecosystem is the basic
functional unit in ecology that
includes organisms, populations
and communities influencing the
different properties of the other
living organisms. The diversity of
ecosystem helps the plants and
animals maintain their capacity to
reproduce and increase their
chance to survive.

ADAPTATION
 ADAPTATION – is the ability of an organism to adjust and
thrive in a given environment.
 Allorganisms have their own way of adaptations that help
them survive and thrive. It is the result of evolution in which
species undergo changes over long period of time. Adaptation
usually happens when a gene mutates or changes by accident.
Some mutations can help organisms to survive better than
those species without mutation.
 Animals that are better adapted to their environment gave a
bigger chance to survive and breed. On the contrary, animals
that are not well adapted to an environment may not survive.
Types of Adaptation
1. Behavioral Adaptation
Examples: *Goats stay in herd.
*White herons love to stay with carabaos.
*Makahiya closes its leaves once touched.
2. Structural Adaptation
Examples: *Giraffe has long neck to get its food from tree *Cactus
has small spikes
*Cheetah has long legs
*Camel has humps at its back
*Waterlily has waxy-coated leaves on long stalks that contain
many air spaces
3. Physiological Adaptation
Examples: *Chameleon blends with the color of surrounding
*Snake has venom
HOW ABOUT THEM?
SPECIES/POPULATION GROWTH
 IF THE SPECIES OF GROUP OF SPECIES THRIVE, THEY ENABLE TO GROW AND
FLOURISH.

TYPES OF GROWTH
 EXPONENTIAL GROWTH – The population grow more rapidly
because there are plenty of resources available for all
organisms, so more births are recorded than deaths in
organisms.
 LOGISTICGROWTH – This growth is described as For
example, when a population reaches a certain size, there
won’t be enough resources (food, shelter, water) for all of
the organisms. This could cause the population to stop
growing when it reaches the maximum number of
organisms that can be supported, or “carried,” by the
environment. This number is known as the population’s
carrying capacity in a particular environment.
LIMITING FACTORS
 DENSITY INDEPENDENT LIMITING
FACTOR - circumstances that can stop
a population from growing can be such
things as natural disasters,
temperature, sunlight, and the
activities of humans in the
environment.
 DENSITY DEPENDENT LIMITING FACTOR
- come into play when a population
reaches a certain number of organisms
that the resources can’t support.
LET’S SEE!!!

Read each situation

in the table below,
then state if it is a
density-independent
limiting factor or a
density-dependent
limiting factor.
Indicate the specific
limiting factor that
is occurring.
