ANALYSIS OF FLUE GAS

OBJECTIVE:
To learn the principle involved in the analysis of flue gases in
connection with the test of steam boiler which gives an
important means for determining the relative value of
different methods of firing and of different type of furnace.
THEORY:
The sample of flue gas is taken from the flue or chimney through
the pipe. The pipe extended well into the flue and is preferably
open as a better sample of the gas can be taken if the sampling
pipe is slotted or is perforated along its length. The pipe outside
the flue is connected by means of a short rubber tube to the
sampling bottle.

THEORY:
A valve should be put as near as possible to the end of such a
pipe so that it can be closed up when the sampling bottles are
removed. If the pipe cannot be closed, the suction in the flue will
draw air into the pipe and fill it so that when again connecting up
the sampling bottle all the air must be removed before a true
sample can be taken.
Procedure:
1. The gas sample should be carried from the sampling pipe in a
single tube to the bottle A for the separation of condensed
moisture and tars, pass the T-connection to one end of which
the connecting bottle B is connected, through the suction bottle
C half filled with water, which indicates by bubbling that a
sample is being drawn.
2. The aspirating process shall be strong, continuous, and at a
uniform rate.

Procedure:
3. The vessel D having a capacity somewhat greater that the
bottle B may be used to contain the water used for
displacement. It is connected to the bottle by rubber tubing
fitted with pinch cock for regulating the flow of displaced water
out of the bottle.
4. As only 2 to 3 minutes are required to fill the orsat apparatus
there is practically a continuous sample and analysis of the
gas aspirated from the breeching. If the water is used bottle B
and vessel D, it shall be saturated with the gas being
analyzed, or concentrated brine may be used.
