What is a computer?
 A computer is an electronic device that can perform
computations and make logical decisions billions of times
faster than human beings.
 • A person operating a desk calculator could spend an
entire lifetime performing calculations and still not
complete as many calculations as a powerful personal
computer can perform in one second!
 Computers process data under the control of sets of
instructions called computer programs.
How computers work?
Booting up your computer
 When you switching up on your computer , a small initiating
program BIOS (basic input/output System or Built in Operating
System) is loaded into memory(RAM).The BIOS software is written
in a ROM on the mainboard.
 The primary function of the BIOS is to identify and initialize system
hardware devices to copy(load) the operating system software from
permanent storage to RAM(random access memory). This process is
known is booting, or booting up, which is short for bootstrapping.

Software
 Software is set of instructions that tell the computer what to do and how
to do.
 We can use another name for software is program.

 There are two types of software :

 System software
 Application software
Types of software
 System Software:
 system software is a general purpose software
 an interface between user and computer
 Operating system
 Utility programs
 Application Software:
 Performs specific tasks for users.
 programs used by the users to perform a task.
 Business application
 Multimedia application
 Entertainment and educational software
 Driver Programs (Device Driver)
 Small program that allows a specific input or output device to communicate with the rest of the computer
system
 communicate I/O devices with computer
Architecture of computer system
What is operating system
 An OS is a program which acts as an interface between computer users
and the computer hardware.
 It provides a user-friendly environment in which a user may easily
develop and execute programs.
 Otherwise, hardware knowledge would be mandatory for computer
programming.
User interface

 A program that controls a display for the user (usually on a computer monitor)
and that allows the user to interact with the system) .

 The user interface allows the user to communicate with the operating system.
Types of user interface

 Command line interface

 Graphical user interface
Command line interface(CLI)
Examples of command
Graphical User Interface (GUI)

 Is a type of user interface which allows people to interact

with computer with images rather than text commands.
 Accept input via keyboard and pointing devices.
 Easy to learn.

 Icons
 Desktop
 Windows
