ELECTROMAGNETISM IN MUSIC
BY: HAMZIH, XIANG, RYAN, ANGUS & FANG QUAN
HOW IT WORKS?
 Sound is affected by the
surroundings in which it travels and
by the frequency of the sound
waves.
 We design musical instruments to
manipulate the sound waves they
produce.
 Further, we know that there are
sound waves that are outside the
range of human hearing, such as
those produced by a dog whistle. A
physicists have researched sound
both inside and outside the range of
human hearing, interesting
properties have been discovered.
MAGNETS IN THE
MUSIC INDUSTRY

You are surely aware that other

factors, such as whether the
instrument is tuned, affect how
well an instrument performs in
addition to the person playing it.
You might not be aware, though,
that a big part of an instrument's
acoustics and sound comes from
its internal magnets. Furthermore,
the instrument's internal magnet's
force and size, as well as the
speaker, can affect the
performance.
ELECTRIC GUITARS

 Since they affect the pickup's quality, strong magnets are crucial for any guitarist or
bassist. Electric guitars and bases wouldn't be able to shriek loud enough to be heard
above cheering crowds without a powerful magnet.
 Bar magnets made of AlNiCo or ceramic are found inside guitar pickups.
 Depending on the design, a guitar may have one to six magnets.
 Typically, a bar magnet located beneath the pickup of magnets that use one or two
magnets charges the pole piece that runs through the coil.
 Depending on the design of the instrument, some others use magnets as pole parts.
MICROPHONES

 Magnets play a crucial role in audio applications like microphones.

 Due to their many beneficial qualities, such as their great corrosion resistance and durability,
 AlNiCo magnets are used in microphones.
 When sound waves strike the diaphragm, which is coupled to a coil of wire encircled by a
magnet, AlNiCo magnets create a magnetic field.
 Following that, the coil oscillates, causing an electric current to flow through the magnetic
field.
 An amplifier or a sound recording equipment receives the electric current, which amplifies
the sound.
SPEAKERS

 We use magnets whenever you use a loudspeaker to listen to music.

 Inside speakers are ferrite and ceramic magnets that become electromagnets
when an electric current is sent via a coil of wire.
 Vibrations are produced by the magnet's creation of an opposite magnetic field.
 Through the speaker, we can hear the vibrations. The opposing magnetic field
increases in size as the magnet does.
 In other words, a speaker will be louder the bigger the magnet.

HOW SPEAKERS USE ELECTROMAGNETISM? (PART 2)
 Why and how do speakers use magnets? Speakers are transducers of energy that convert
electrical energy (audio signals) into mechanical wave energy (sound waves). Many speaker
drivers utilize electromagnetism to turn the AC voltage of the audio signal into diaphragm
movement within a magnetic field to produce sound.
 So, by sending an alternating current (audio signal) through a conductive material, we produce a
varying magnetic field around it. If this coil is placed in proximity to a magnet, the two magnetic
fields will interact and cause the conductor and magnet to repel or attract one another.
 When it comes to speaker drivers, combining permanent magnets and some sort of conductive
diaphragm design would allow us to turn audio signals into sound waves. It is possible to send an
electrical audio signal through a conductor and have it move an electromagnetic diaphragm to
produce sound.
 This brings us to loudspeaker driver design.
