Irving Penn Photographer

Analysis
Basic Information
Born on the 16th June 1917 in New Jersey, USA, and now one of the
greatest photographers of the 20th century, Irving Penn was renowned
for his powerful photographs and skillful prints. Although he spent
more than 60 years being recognised as one of Vogue magazine's finest
photographers, Penn was a deeply reclusive individual who shied away
from the spotlight and dedicated himself to his craft in a quiet,
unwavering manner. He addressed photography with an artistic eye at a
time when it was mostly thought of as a communication tool,
expanding the creative possibilities of the medium in both his
professional and personal work. Unfortunately, Penn died on the 7th
October 2009 in Manhattan, New York, USA.
Visual Qualities
The photograph shows food displayed in a particular way to link with
still life. My eye is drawn to the peas because they are the brightest
colour in the photo. I like how well the image links to still life and how
different and unique it is. Some composition styles used are colour
contrast, and shadows. There is one light used in the image and it is on
the left hand side, making the left brighter, casting shadows, and
making the right darker. Some formal elements used in the photo are
colour, shape, and texture.
Camera Settings
The camera has been focused on all parts of the image meaning a
higher aperture has been used. I also think a higher shutter speed has
been used to capture a sharp, still image. In my own work, I would like
to create a shoot that links to still life and lock as well as Irving Penn.
