SCALE AND DISTANCE

RAYNOLD PASARIBU
SCALE

CARTOGRAPHERS use scales to make objects on the map much smaller than they are in real life and to
show more area

SCALE : The relationship between the size of features on the map and their real size on the ground

A ratio scale uses fractions instead of units to simplify maps

Ex : A scale of

Measure map distance 1 : 250 Real life distance

Its mean : for every 1 unit on the map, it is 250 units in real life
SCALE

SCALE 1 : 50,000 SCALE 1 : 25,000

(1 CM = 50,000 IN REAL LIFE) (1 CM = 25,000 IN REAL LIFE)

RATIO SCALE LARGE SCALE (A large scale map shows a larger amount of detail)

SMALL SCALE MAPS LARGE SCALE MAPS

Show a larger area (less detail), and have a larger Show more detail and have a smaller number on
number on the right of the ratio the right of the ratio

Ex : A scale of 1 : 250,000 Ex : A scale of 1 : 1250

VERBAL AND LINEAR SCALE

VERBAL SCALE LINEAR SCALE

A verbal description of how map and Scales that visually show how much
the real world are related distance is represented by a line on a map

500 m
Ex : 1 Centimetre on the map Ex :
represents 500 m on the ground
= 1 : 50,000

500 m / 2 cm = 1 : 25,000
The Formula

SCALE = Distance on the Map : Actual distance

ACTUAL DISTANCE = Distance on the map :

scale

DISTANCE ON THE MAP = Actual distance X

Scale
DISTANCE

Using a ruler and some maths, we can calculate the distance between two points on a map.

Ex :

What is the distance between Budi house to school in kilometres! If the scale 1 : 25,000 and the
distance in the map is 5 cm
