Building Retrofitting
The process of changing or repairing something after it has been manufactured is known as retrofitting.
After a building’s construction and occupation, retrofitting work entails modifying or repairing the
structure system. As a result of this work, the structure’s safety and durability have improved.
Buildings that have been impacted by failures and damage caused by seismic forces must be retrofitted.
Your home can be retrofitted to make it more resistant to seismic activity caused by earthquakes.
Structure retrofitting refers to modifying an existing structure to safeguard it from flooding or other
risks such as high winds and earthquakes.
There are a variety of issues that structural members face, all of which must be addressed. Some of the
most typical issues include:
Cracks in the structure
Design or construction flaws
Seismic harm
Methods of retrofitting
The existing walls of a building are added a specific thickness by adding concrete, bricks
and steel adjusted at specific places as reinforcement.
The wall weight increases and it can bear more horizontal and vertical loads in this type of
retrofitting techniques for RCC buildings
This is a commonly used approach for retrofitting non-ductile reinforced concrete frame
structures. When big apertures are required, steel bracing is a viable choice for retrofitting
buildings. The existing walls of a building are reinforced with bricks, concrete, and steel
aligned at specific points.

A base isolation system is a method of seismic protection where the structure
(superstructure) is separated from the base (foundation or substructure). By separating the
structure from its base the amount of energy that is transferred to the superstructure during
an earthquake is reduced significantly.
Base isolation is the separation of the superstructure from the foundation. It is the most
effective technology for passive structural vibration control.
Material for Isolating the Base
Rubber bearings
Epoxy Grout for base plate
Cementitious Grout
Mass Reduction
This may be achieved, for instance, by removal of one or more storey's as shown in Figure.
In this case it is evident that the removal of the mass will lead to a decrease in the period,
which will lead to an increase in the required strength.
It is obvious that removing the bulk will result in a reduction in loading, which will result
in a rise in the needed strength.
Material for Mass Reduction
Jacketing is the process of strengthening weak RCC columns which have deteriorated over
some time due to adverse atmospheric conditions or due to poor maintenance of the
structure. Other reasons during the construction phase include design errors, deficient
concrete productions, bad execution process. It is the most common method of building
retrofitting.
Jacketing is the most widely utilized method for reinforcing a building’s columns and
beams.
Jacketing entails the addition of concrete to the existing columns, as well as longitudinal
and transverse strengthening.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP wrap) reinforcement and repair technology is a
new type of structural reinforcement technology. It refers to the use of high-performance
resin adhesives to paste carbon fiber cloth on the surface of building structural
components, so that both work together to improve the bearing capacity of structural
components (bending, shear) so as to achieve the purpose of strengthening and reinforcing
the building.
It uses carbon fiber fabrics or laminate on the surface of the concrete to form a composite
that works in coordination with concrete to strengthen the component structure and
improve its mechanical performance.
Other Material for Carbon retrofitting
Epoxy primer
Epoxy Saturant
Epoxy Adhesive
Epoxy Putty
Epoxy Repair Mortar
Epoxy Injection
Rust remover
Zinc coating
Protective Coating
