Heads
Unit 1: Introduction to Society, Community and Education

Prepared by: Large Group 4

Rationale
Philippines was the only country in Southeast Asia which provided just 10 years of basic education to its population but
ever since the K to 12 implementation, the country has joined its neighbors in adopting an education system which will
provide more opportunities to students on a global scale. Continued reform in the education sector is essential but with the
K to 12 program, this has put the country on the right track. When people heard news of the K-12 program implementation
in the country, it received mixed reactions. Suddenly, there was a combination of backlashes and praise in the background
with the students left puzzled on whose voice to listen to. There are still challenges and standards of quality to consider but
the important thing is to establish that development is present as a result of the new program.

This information gathering is through an interview by a school head in Maloh Central School where questions are provided
to answer the concepts to support by. Given with the following questions; How K-12 program responds to the societal and
community needs?, What are the challenges being face during the implementation of K-12 program in your school?, What
do you think are the possible challenges that the K-12 teachers are currently facing in their school?, What factors make K-
12 program difficult to succeed in the country?, What is your role in the implementation of educational programs like the
enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K12 program?, What do you think educational philosophies that you think
effective in teaching and learning process?, What is the importance or greatest impact of the K-12 Program to the
educational landscape in the Philippines?
Rationale
The interviewers discussed and conclude that along implementation through the application of K12 curriculum, it has
brought impacts to the landscape of the Philippines that allow and provides students with a decongested 12-year program
allowing them to master skills and absorb fundamental competencies. K to 12 will offer all learners with a holistic
education and students will develop their communication and social skills, as well as positive peer interaction and a variety
of educational outcomes. Students will also obtain additional knowledge and experience, which will be useful in the future.
We could say that K-12 curriculum is effective as it reflects on the philosophy, goals, objectives, learning experiences,
instructional resources, and assessments that comprise a specific educational program.

The interview will be conducted at Maloh Central Elemntary situated in Barangay Maloh, one of the coastal barangays of
Siaton. With its geographical location, Maloh is one of the most progressive fishing grounds of the south resulting to
different families found because of transients coming in the locality. The school was first situated along the beach, south
side of the barangay. It was on this year that the school was transferred to the present area of one hectare along National
Highway 58 kilometers south of the capital city of Negros Oriental – Dumaguete City.
Methodology
Instrument
The researchers collected data in a direct manner through an interview given with openended questions. This method is a
way of collecting data or response from the respondents through answering the open-ended questions coming from the
interviewers which has relation to the concepts. The group has is a list of prepared questions which are intended to provide
answers by the interviewee.

Procedure
The researchers have written a letter to the respondent, which has been signed by the instructor, requesting permission to
conduct an interview. Then, prepared questions for respondent with relation to the problem of the study and will be
conducted through face-to-face interview, with all IATF Protocols strictly followed. The respondent will be asked open-
ended questions from the concepts on the impact of K-12 to the educational landscape of the Philippines; the importance of
K-12 to the education system of the Philippines; the application of various philosophies and sociological theories in the K-
12 Curriculum; how the K-12 Curriculum responds to societal and community needs; and ∙ the roles of school heads in the
implementation of education programs like the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K-12 Program. Following
that, researchers will compile all of the information gathered and hold a discussion.
Results and Discussion
The primary purpose of this interview focuses on identifying the perceptions of a school head in a particular school
discussing on the concepts of the impact and importance of K-12 to the landscape of the Philippines. The
following information are the data being gathered and are result of the said interview.

The role of K-12 program in community consists of the connections between schools and individuals, businesses, and
formal and informal organizations and institutions that can leverage community resources and assist students in
achieving positive outcomes. Ma'am Agnes said that K-12 program respond to the societal and community needs
that we know when teachers provide the power of education to today's youth, thereby giving them the possibility
for a better future. Teachers simplify the complex, and make abstract concepts accessible to students. Teachers also
expose students to ideas and topics that they might otherwise not have come into contact with. As we observed that
Ma'am Agnes able to explained that K-12 program establishes healthy and supportive environments, Implement
comprehensive physical education and health education programs.

When educators and policymakers were planning for the 2019-2020 school year, no one could have imagined how
education would look today. The COVID-19 pandemic brought many unexpected challenges to the classroom, and
while everyone did their best to adapt, the issues were both unique and complex. Ma'am Agnes added that mostly
challenges being face during the implementation of K-12 program could be Learning loss The number of lost
classroom hours from the early spring 2020 shutdowns will vary by the school district, but no one can deny the loss
of prime teaching time.
According to Ma'am Agnes, that since we are now in the 21st century generation, we use variety of technological tools in
schools such as computers, digital TV, projectors and others. One challenge is student don’t have access to
technology because of not enough facilities to use. Another is student lacks in class participation through some
personal reasons; maybe lack of parental support. In this times of pandemic is the interactions with student just to
avoid the spread of the virus. Also the learning resources use in distributing lesson to student there is no enough
materials to produce modules. Since we are now in the 21st century generation, we use variety of technological
tools in schools. The respondent said that K-12 program is succeeding in the country because it has reached into its
7th years producing K-12 graduates. However, one factor she uttered was parents would less interest in sending their
students to school because of the additional years in school. Parents would thought that it would be a lengthy study
journey for their children and instead they could finish as early as possible to help them another year of burden will
be considered.

The role of teachers in the curriculum process is to help students develop an engaged relationship with the content.
Active learning will increase the focus and retention of the curriculum, resulting in an exciting learning
environment. Miss Almagro added that being a school head is a huge responsibility because she will be consider as
the root of all teachers in teaching and learning process. Her role being the school head is to maintain the good
service her teacher are providing to student and let her teacher undergo trainings and seminar so that learning in
them will be up-to-date. Another is she will serves as the bind of good relationships among the teachers in the
school making them work efficiently considering they have good relations to one another.
Conclusion
The interviewers could conclude that along implementation through the application of K-12 curriculum has brought
impacts to the landscape of the Philippines that allow and provides students with a decongested 12-year program that
allows them to master skills and absorb fundamental competencies. K to 12 will offer all learners with a holistic education
and students will develop their communication and social skills, as well as positive peer interaction and a variety of
educational outcomes. Students will also obtain additional knowledge and experience, which will be useful in the future.
From K through 12, there are greater job and business prospects. Many Philippine schools are gradually doing this. After
receiving their diplomas and completing competency-based examinations, graduates of the new system can immediately
find work. The Philippine K-12 system attempts to increase pupils' mathematical, scientific, and language abilities. We
could say that K-12 curriculum is effective as it reflects on the philosophy, goals, objectives, learning experiences,
instructional resources, and assessments that comprise a specific educational program. No curriculum will be perfect, a
finished product cast in stone, or free from criticism, but to be effective it must be accepted by teachers and must be
deemed educationally valid by parents and the community at large. K-12 curriculum viewed as a process by which meeting
student needs leads to improvement of student learning. In addition, it cannot be stagnant. It is a living document that is in
constant flux and adaptable to changes in the educational community and in society in general.
Reflection
We learned that the country continues to find the best ways in order to uplift the educational system in the Philippines. The
Philippines has a vibrant and diverse education system, with the government, assisted by the private sector, providing a
wide range of education from early years up to college and university across the archipelago. The Philippines has
embarked on education reforms that it considers crucial to its economic development, bringing its school system into line
with international standards and seeking to open up its higher education sector to more people, while supporting R&D that
will raise its academic profile and bring lasting benefits to the country. The government had to overcome substantial
opposition to introduce K-12, a sign of its determination to bring lasting change, but sustained funding to support the
increased demand on resources will be crucial if these bold reforms are to be a success.

We realized that supporting the K-12 reform, the government set four key objectives: providing education options for all
out-of-school adults and young people; eliminating drop-outs and repetition during the first three years of school;
encouraging the completion of a full cycle of basic schooling to a satisfactory level at every grade by all Filipino children;
and committing to the attainment of basic education competencies for everyone. The curriculum would be an advantage to
the young adults venturing out into the professional world because they would be much more equipped to deal with the
higher level of learning as they enter college.
Reflection
With this, they can choose to continue their education to higher forms which will be another great journey to access
essential learning developments. It can also make students more prepared in joining the workforce. The new curriculum
has this benefit because they compel each student to be enthusiastic about the workforce and the scheme empowers
students to make a choice on their own. They may or may not pursue a college program especially if they have chosen a
track other than the academic track. Senior high school students need not fret if they would like to explore other fields
aside from their own because they get to choose electives that can also hone their skills in certain areas that they are
interested in.

Therefore, as students who have undergone this K-12 curriculum we will apply all the lessons and skills learned
throughout studying under this program. We will do our best to be one of the best versions of being a product of K-12
curriculum. Indeed we have learned, performed and experienced things that we didn’t expect as we undergo 12 years in
DepEd and it was a great thing happened to us. Considering ourselves as the future yardstick that would let the society
bring on the top of success. We will continue to discover and explore things that would let the educational system as
effective as we have in order to become globally competitive.
