THE DEATH OF A SALESMAN

CONFLICT
GROUP 2
MAN VS HIMSELF
In this movie, Willy is continuously at odds with himself. When
his firm beliefs are questioned, he goes into fantasy. He also
breaks free from delusion to save himself and his family. While
at battle with himself, he refuses to realize that he is only an
ordinary man, which finally leads to his death. However, his war
with himself stems from his attempts to overcome cultural
restrictions impeding his financial advancement.
MAN VS MAN
Willy struggles with Biff throughout the play as he attempts to
mend their connection. He and Biff's relationship has ups and
downs before settling into a happy, loving relationship after a
fierce dispute. Biff, on the other hand, does not feel the same
way about his father because of his father's rage. Biff does not
share the same with his father, Willy about their relationship.
MAN VS SOCIETY
Willy has to compete for success in a viable, materialistic
American culture. He is hampered even more by his
preconceived idea of success in American society, which holds
that people with more social skills have greater financial
success. He also feels that he and his family are destined for
greatness, which, together with his uncomplicated method for
success, contributes to his battle to earn money in a culture
that opposes his technique of achieving wealth.
Willy's world collapses on him at that point, as his
idealized plan for success has failed, and he is without a
dream to instantly live in, so he must stay in reality and
complete his struggle with Biff, even if the most
important fight has already been lost. Willy kills himself
because he feels he cannot win against society and is
more valuable to his family dead than alive since his
family will receive monetary compensation for his death.
