and Equipment
Learning Objectives:
A.Classify the different tools, materials, and equipment of
common handicrafts; and
B. Recognize the importance of common handicraft tools,
materials and equipment;
C. Create a video tutorial about how to properly use the
common handicrafts tools and equipment
Common Handicraft Materials
Materials in
Handicrafts • Seashell
-refer to the outside hard part of marine. It is a non-
marine mollusks which is called the shell.

-Shells are used in jewelry and other decorative


crafts.
Materials in
Handicrafts • Coconut palm
-The coconut palm is grown throughout the tropics
for decorations as well as for its many culinary and
non-culinary uses.

-They are believed to be largely cross-pollinated,


although some dwarf varieties are self-pollinating.

Handicrafts
-It is the fastest growing woody plant in the world. This is due to its unique

root system that is dependent on the soil and climate condition.

-They are of high cultural and economic value not only in the East Asia,

South East Asia but to most countries of the world where they are used

extensively as a building material, source of food, decoration, and ornaments

in gardens and homes.


Materials in
Handicrafts • Abaca
-Abaca also called Manila hemp, is a large tree-like herb which belongs to
the banana family. It is one of the most valuable cordage fibers. It is found in

the Philippines and grows best on the slope of volcanic mountains

-More rope is made of abaca than any other fiber because it is more durable,

stronger, and can resist saltwater better.

Zigzag Rule – this is a measuring tool
with and English and Metric System of
measurement. It can be folded easily for
safekeeping.

Hand Drill - This is classified as a


holding tool, used for holding drill bits for
boring from 1/4 diameter to the smallest
bit.
 
Coping Saw - Used for cutting
irregular curves on thin pieces of wood.

Backsaw – A thin bladed saw used to


cut fine pieces of wood.
Crosscut Saw - this is used for cutting
pieces of wood across the grain.

Keyhole saw – sometimes called a


compass saw, used for cutting small
arcs and circles.
Claw Rammer- A tool used for driving and
pulling out nails.

Knives- These are edge-cutting tools used


to cut small pieces of work like rattan, small
pieces of bamboo projects in handicraft.

Oilstone – used to sharpen edge-cutting


tools.
Workbench – a worktable with a thick hardwood top
usually intended for two persons to work on.

Spokeshave- This is used for cutting irregular curves.

Long-nose Pliers- This is a holding tool and belongs


to the pliers family. It has an elongated tapered jaw
with a side cutter.
Plane – a tool used to smoothen the
surface of a wood.

Vises – equipment used to hold


pieces of stock while working on it.
Task:
