What are the colors of the rocks?
Which are rough? Smooth? Shiny? Hard? Soft?

◎ Marble and granite come in variety


of colors.

◎ Chalk is white and coal is black.

◎ Granite, chalk, and marble are


smooth while coal is rough.

◎ Marble and granite are shiny and


hard while chalk and coal are dull
and soft.

How can we group rocks based on their physical properties?
◎ Rocks are of different colors.

◎ Some are hard whereas some are soft.

◎ Some rocks are rough whereas others are smooth.

◎ Some rocks have a metallic shine or luster while some appear dull.

◎ Rocks also have different abilities to absorb water.

◎ Some rocks like sandstone absorb more water, whereas some rocks like marble do
not absorb water.

properties for different
purposes.

◎ For example, we use soft


rocks like chalk to write on a
