MINIMIZING HEAT

TRANSFER
Flow of Heat
Block 17, Lesson 4
What can you do to keep food hot for a longer period of time?
Can we keep food hot forever?

• We can use a food casserole to

keep it hot for a longer period of
time.

• We cannot keep the food hot

forever as we cannot stop the
transfer of heat.

• However, a casserole can

minimize the transfer of heat.
AIM:
Today, we will be able to
explain ways in which
heat transfer is
minimized in daily life
situations.
Resources Needed
XSEED Content Book, Worksheet 4,

Keywords we will use:

vacuum, casting
Look at the picture of the 2 drinking bottles.
Water will stay hot longer in which drinking bottle - the plastic bottle or the
thermos flask?
Look at Fig.8 of a thermos flask in the XSEED Content Book, p.23.
In your Science notebook, write how each part of the flask helps in minimizing the loss of
heat from the thermos flask and keeping the water hot longer.
How do the different parts of a thermos flask prevent heat transfer?

• A thermos flask has an air tight lid

called stopper which prevents heat
transfer through convection.

• The vacuum between the walls of

the flask prevents heat transfer
through conduction.

• And the inner silver coating which

prevents heat transfer through
radiation.
How do we minimize heat loss in some other situations in our daily life?

• In day-to-day life, we need to minimize heat transfer in

many situations.

• For example –
-We should not keep the door of the
refrigerator open for long to
minimize heat transfer.

-While sitting in an air-conditioned

car or room, we need to minimize
heat entering the room or car to
keep cool by keeping doors and
windows closed or drawing curtains
or window shields.
Why do we need to minimize the transfer of heat around us?

• We need to minimize the transfer

of heat to conserve energy and
save fuel.

• For example, if we keep food in

the casserole, we do not need to
reheat it before eating.

• This saves cooking fuel or

electricity.
