C. Young residual
D. Weathered rock
RECAP

 Shear and strain, analyze the stress and strain using

related equations.

 Type of loads : concentrated forces, distributed forces

and concentrated moments.

 Type of supports : pinned supports, roller supports, and

fixed supports.

 Type of beams : overhanging beams, simply supported

beams, cantilevered beams

INTRODUCTION

 Shear and moment diagrams provide detailed information about the variation of the shear
and moment along the beam’s axis.

 SF and BM diagram are often used by engineers to decide where to place reinforcement
materials within the beam or how to proportion the size of the beam at the various points
along its length.
 Changes of SF and BM in beams as reaction to several types or combinations of loading using
different support conditions
 Value of SF and BM as well as the location of maximum value can be determined.
INTRODUCTION

HOW TO DRAW THE SHEAR FORCE AND BENDING MOMENT DIAGRAM

STEP 1 : Draw a free body diagram of the beam

STEP 2 : Calculate the reaction forces and reaction moments at the beam supports
(considering all of the external loads, both applied loads and the loads at the supports must be balance
“equilibrium”)

STEP 3 : Determine the internal shear forces and bending moments at every location
along the beam.
EXAMPLE

The beam shown below is supported by a pin at A and roller at B. Calculate the reactions at both
supports due to the loading.
