PSYCHOANALYSIS
•Every person has his own identity as far as personality is concerned (Javir,Costales,Rivas,
2002)
•Personality comes from Latin word “Persona” which means “Actor’s face mask” .
•Personality therefore is the “mask” worn as a person moves from situation to situation during
a lifetime.

• When we go through the different stages in life we are confronted with issues arising from our
interaction with one another and we try to question the kind of personality we possess.
• Panopio(1994) identifies biological inheritance, geographic environment, cultural and social
environment as determining factors contributing to personality formation.
 FREUD COMPARED MIND TO AN ICEBERG
•In the 20th century, Sigmund Freud introduced Psychoanalysis
which radically transformed human self understanding.
•Freud explained the individuals are only aware of a small portion
of the forces that drive their behavior.
•From his perspective, human have conscious, preconscious and an
unconscious mind (Siegfried , 2014).
•Freud explains that personality results from the clash of three
forces: the Ego, the Superego, and the Id.
•Psychoanalysis is the process of using what we know about these
three parts of someone’s personality to analyze the ways that person
behave ( Lapsley, and Stey, 2011).
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist
and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical
method for evaluating and treating pathologies
seen as originating from conflicts in the
psyche, through dialogue between patient and
psychoanalyst, and the distinctive theory of
mind and human agency derived from it.
FREUD’S MODEL OF THE
MIND
There are two Freudian Models of the mind: the Topographical and Structural Models.

FREUD’S STRUCTURE OF THE MIND

Ego
Superego

Id
In Freud’s Topographical model of the mind, be described the features of the mind structure and function using the
analogy of an Iceberg to describe the three levels of mind.

CONSCIOUS
Conscious (10%)

Preconscious PRECONSCIOUS
(Superego)
(10-15%)

Ego

Unconscious UNCONSCIOUS
(Id) (75-80%)
Freud’s applied these three systems to his structure of the personality or, psyche – the Id, ego, and superego. Here the id is
regarded as entirely unconscious, the ego and superego have conscious, preconscious and unconscious aspect.

Below is the summary of Freud’s model of the mind (Siegfried, 2014).

TOPOGRAPHICAL MODEL STRUCTURAL MODEL

Conscious mind Ego (Reason….I think)

-Contains information of which we are aware to any given -Part of the personality that maintains a balance between
moment: impulses (our Id) and our conscience (our Superego)
Anything that is thought, perceived or understood resides at
this level. -Based on the reality principle

-understands that other people have needs and desires and that
sometimes being impulsive or selfish can hurt us in the end.
Pre-conscious Superego (Duties…. I should)

-Contains the memories and thoughts that are easily recalled, -Part of the personality that represents the conscience, the
ready to break into consciousness at any moment moral parts of us

Example: Memories, Stored Knowledge -Develops due to the moral and ethical restraints placed on
us by our caregivers. It dictates our belief of right and wrong.

Unconscious ID (I want)

-the primary source of human behaviors -Contains our primitive impulses – such as Thirst, Anger,
Hunger – and the desire for instant gratification or release.
-personal information of which we are NOT aware; the
drivers, urges, wishes and thoughts of all of our past -We are born with our Id
experience,
-An important part of our personality, because as newborns,
All these threaten to destabilize the conscious mind if they it allows us to get our basic needs met
surface.
Example: Violent, motives, fears, immoral urges, shameful -based on our pleasure principle no consideration of the
experience, unacceptable sexual desires. others
