Climate Change
These are the statistically
significant changes in climate
for a continuous period of time.
Causes of Climate Change
Natural Causes Human Activities

◦ Volcanic Eruptions ◦ Burning Fossil Fuels

◦ Orbital Changes ◦ Deforestation
◦ Significantly Reducing Ocean health
Volcanic Eruptions
◦ Volcanic eruptions are responsible for releasing molten rock, or
lava, from deep within the Earth, forming new rock on the
Earth’s surface. But eruptions also impact the atmosphere.
◦ The gases and dust particles thrown into the atmosphere during
volcanic eruptions have influences on climate. Most of the
particles spewed from volcanoes cool the planet by shading
incoming solar radiation. The cooling effect can last for months
to years depending on the characteristics of the eruption.
Volcanoes have also caused global warming over millions of
years during times in Earth’s history when extreme amounts of
volcanism occurred, releasing greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere

Orbital Changes

Nearly all of Earth’s atmospheric

energy is ultimately derived from
the sun, so it makes sense that
the planet’s position and
orientation relative to the sun
would have an effect on climate.
The shape of the Earth’s orbit
around the sun is not constant,
and neither are the tilt of the
Earth’s axis and the direction of
the axis relative to fixed stars in
the galaxy; see Figures 1-3 below.
Deforestation
◦ When deforestation occurs, much of the carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, which
contributes to climate change. In the last decade, the largest amounts of deforestation occurred across the humid tropics,
mostly in Africa, followed by South America.
Burning Fossil
Fuels
When fossil fuels are burned,
they release large amounts of
carbon dioxide, a greenhouse
gas, into the air. Greenhouse
gases trap heat in our
atmosphere, causing global
warming

Significantly
Reducing Ocean
health
Oceans are the largest heat
sink on the planet. They
absorb 90% of the excess
heat caused by climate
change. Oceans are also a
very efficient carbon sink,
absorbing 23% of human-
caused CO2 emissions
Climate Change
and its Impact to
Society
Climate change could cause
severe effects to all life forms
around our planet. It directly
affects the basic elements of
peoples lives like water, food,
health, use of land, and the
environment.
