Stabilization of Clayey soil of

Amo Chhu using plastic.

Introduction
Plastics are a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally
occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened to
retain the given shape.

The accumulation of plastic waste in huge quantities is causing

both environment and financial problems.
Introduction

 Clayey soils are soils that illustrate a considerable variation in volume as they come in contact with moisture.
 Soil stabilization is a technique used to improve the condition of a ground to have a higher bearing capacity by
modifying the engineering properties of the soil.
Aim
This study aims to test and examine how the addition of plastic into clayey soil improves the physical
properties of soil
1. To study the change in properties of a clay soil due to addition of plastic.
2. To obtain the optimum percentage of plastic at which the soil is most stable.
3. To validate the practical application of the method.
Problem Statement.

Expansive soil causing more structural and financial losses than other natural disasters.

Developmental activities may extend to steep terrain and near river valleys where the soil is mostly
unstable.

Bhutan being in an extremely fragile terrain is highly susceptible to numerous natural and climate
change hazards.

Increment in plastic waste production.

Excepted outcome

The preliminary change in properties of soil due to addition of plastic can be known.

The plastic percentage at which soil becomes stable can be known.

The data analysis and interpretation can help in recommendation of the practical application of
using plastic as a soil stabilizer.
Nobility
There are many similar researches done on this topic in most of the countries around
the world, but this study is rather peculiar. It is mainly to study the stabilization of
clayey soil using plastic and its implementation. Most of the previous researchers have
used plastic bottles (polyethylene terephthalate) as the additive in the soil
stabilization process. Whereas we will be using plastic wrappers as the additive and
examine the alteration in the strength and properties of the soil.
