Classifications (Types) of Software
 System Software
System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's
hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered
model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user
applications.
System software is used to manage the computer itself. It runs in the background,
maintaining the computer's basic functions so users can run higher-level application
software to perform certain tasks.
Systems Software (Operating Systems)
Systems Software (Firmware)

Firmware is a small piece of software that makes hardware work as its manufacturer
intended it to. It consists of programs written by software developers to make
hardware devices “tick.” Without firmware, most of the electronic devices we use
daily wouldn’t be able to work. They would not do anything.

In mobile phones, the firmware is the middleman between the hardware and the
operating system.

 Application Software
Application software, or app for short, is software that performs specific tasks for an end-user.

Application software can be a software package (canned program). A software package is a ready-
made, generally error free, standard software for general works.
Example: MS Office; Wattpad; Plants and Zombies; ReadEra; Adobe Premiere, etc.

It can also be tailored software. A tailored software is a software designed and developed for specific
process of specific needs of an organization.
Example: CCP Enrollment System; ATM Application; Cebu Pacific Reservation Systems; TicketNet,
etc.

Software
Hardware represents the physical and tangible components of a computer, i.e.
the components that can be seen and touched.
An input device is any hardware device that sends
data to a computer.

• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Microphone, Voice Recognition Device
• Code reader
• Graphics Tablet with Light Pen
• Punch Card Reader
• Joystick
• Scanner
• Monitor (Touch Screen types)
Read-Only Memory (ROM)
Read-only memory (ROM) is a type of storage medium that permanently stores data on
personal computers (PCs) and other electronic devices.

It contains the programming needed to start a PC, which is essential for boot-up; it performs
major input/output tasks and holds programs or software instructions.

Random Access Memory (RAM)

Alternatively referred to as main memory, primary memory, or system memory, RAM
(random-access memory) is a hardware device that allows information to be stored and
retrieved on a computer.

Unlike ROM, RAM is a volatile memory and requires power to keep the data accessible. If the
computer is turned off, all data contained in RAM is lost.
An output device is any peripheral that receives data from a
computer, usually for display, projection, or physical reproduction.
