Tips on Writing a Résumé

Below are some tips on writing a Résumé

• Use the type of Résumé appropriate to you. You can use the chronological
Résumé to highlight your growth and development in your field. If you work
experience is limited, you may use the functional résumé to highlight your skills
instead. If you work experience highlights your skills, you may use the
combination résumé.

• Limit your Résumé to one to two pages. The person in charge of pursuing
Résumés will not be likely to read beyond two pages of your Résumé, particularly
if he or she is unimpressed by the contents of the first two pages.
• Explore and examine your experiences. You can include even minor work
that you do to highlight your work ethics, such as time management and rapport
with people. However, make sure to identify experiences that fit the description
and requirements of the job.
• Be very selective of the achievement that you include. Make sure they are
relevant to the job you are applying for.

• Choose professional as your references. If you need time to sort and talk to
your references, you can put “Available upon request” under the references
section. However, this is highly discouraged. Make sure to sort out your
references before sending your resume.
• Make sure the information in your resume is factual and accurate.
• Use a font style and font size that make the text readable and keep the
layout simple. Clean and clear fonts such as Arial, Open Sans, Verdana, and the
like are preferred. Ensure that the font size is easily readable, but not too big: Stay
within 11 to 12 points. Avoid symbols that can distract the reader.
• Use powerful and active verbs in relating your work experience as well as
the right tense. For a current job, use the presentation tense. For a previous job,
use the past tense.
• Use formal e-mails that include your full name or initials. (e.g.,
kevincruz@gmail.com or kcruz@gmail.com). Informal or whimsical e-mail
address will seem unprofessional
