Secular music was made up of folk songs and ballads, many of which were sung by
wandering musicians called troubadours.
BAROQUE PERIOD
The music characteristics of the Baroque Era
 Fast movement
 Ornamentation
 Dramatic alterations in tempo and volume
 Expressiveness
ROMANTIC
Characteristics of romantic music
 Freeform and design of the music.
 Longer melodies.
 The major use of chromatic harmonies and dissonances.
 More use of dynamics and articulations than ever before.
 Larger instrumentations.
 Dramatic opera.
CLASSICAL
Characteristics of classical period
 Less complicated texture than Baroque (more homophonic).
 Emphasis on beauty, elegance and balance.
 More variety and contrast within a piece than Baroque (dynamics, instruments, pitch, tempo,
key, mood and timbre).
 Melodies tend to be shorter than those in baroque, with clear-cut phrases, and clearly marked
cadences.
 The orchestra increases in size and range. The harpsichord fails out of use. The woodwind
becomes a self-contained section.
20 CENTURY
 Characteristic features of later 20th-century music with origins in futurism include the
prepared piano,
 Integral serialism.
 Extended vocal techniques.
 Graphic notation.
 Improvisation.
 Minimalism.
