ideas
• is the composition for combination of
parts or elements so as to form a whole
• involves looking for similarities and
differences between your sources
Summarizing is relating the most important points in
a text or a portion of a text in our own words. In
fiction we consider the basic story elements – main
characters, setting, plot and sometimes theme in a
summary. In nonfiction we pull together the most
important information about a topic in a coherent
way.
Paraphrasing is used to rewrite the text in your own
words, to clarify meaning and to shorten a longer
statement but keep the main ideas and to avoid
plagiarism. means. To paraphrase a source, you have
to rewrite a passage without changing the meaning of
the original text.
When you synthesize, you paraphrase and summarize to
produce new ideas or arguments. To synthesize, you need
paraphrasing and summarizing skills
Other skills are useful in synthesizing as well. You should be
able to separate facts from opinions, and draw inferences or
logical conclusions from these facts.
This is a step-by-step guide to synthesis materials from a number
of different sources:

1. You should begin by brainstorming your ideas on the topic.

2. Then read relevant material.
3. Make notes on key points from this material. Remember to
always use your own voice and to reference the ideas and words
of others.
4. Then paraphrase or create a summary of each text.
5. Identify common ideas and differences between the texts.
6. From all of this information, you now synthesize or write a new
text.
How to paraphrase in five steps

meaning
