Influencing behavior
The best approach to influencing behavior is to Coach People to think around a
problem.

Coaching Communication approach

ASK TELL
• Thinking Brain on The brain does not like to be told what to do
• Learning Begins
• Competency Checks Can Tell: ER, Praise, They ask
• Taking Control of Conversations

Exercise: Learn to ask questions… 5 Wives & 1 Husband

Influencing Behavior
Behavior is controlled by feedback loops
The 2 Most Important feedback loops are Praise & Correct

P/C A/T EFFECTS REWARD

Wanted Behavior Praise Tell Feel Good Repeats
Unwanted Behavior Correct Ask Think/Learn Changes/Stops

If you tell them, then you must ask (Check back)

Leaders/Managers/Supervisors: Praise Wanted Behavior (Tell)

Correct Unwanted Behavior (Ask)

If you want to influence behavior you must learn to ask questions

ASSIST & ASSURE

• Meetings (Run meetings in a certain way)- TBM – Ask Questions

• Step 7 Conversations: Starting Work is not Step 1
• Effective Supervision: Before – During - After
• Focus Areas: Barriers, DROPS, Working @ height, Hands & Fingers injury,
Slip Trips & Fall.
• New Employee: We don’t know about their attitude.
• Green Horns: We don’t know what they do not know
MEETINGS - TBQs
Holding meetings in a certain way – Asking questions

Supervisors Vital @ Step 1,2 & 6

Effective Supervision

Embed focus areas

• Drops
• Work @Height
• Hands & Fingers
• STF

The essence of supervision is to coach new members and influence behavior of the entire team!
Focus Areas
Same things hurt us every year!!!
• DROPS: Number 1 HiPo Incident
L&H Working @ Height Objects/Eqpt @ Height Trucks
Check Equipment Check Tethered tools Check Secondary retention Load Securing
(Sling, Shackles, Hooks)
Check for loose objects
Check pathway (No
Tangle/Collision)
Check SWL
Clearly Mark red & No-Go zones
Work @ Height

• Be AWED by work @ Height

1. Access Control
Ladder, Scaffold, Work Basket (All have rules)
2. Work Platform
Flat, level, solid, non-slip, large
3. Edge Protection
Handrails, Mid-rails, Kickboard, Harness with Lanyards
4. Down Below
Red & NO-GO Zones, Tethered tools, Harness with Fall Arrest, Stability
Hands & Fingers Injury

40% of all
Injuries
every year.
FOCUS AREA: STF
Safety Conversations (Ask & Tell, Praise & Correct)

2 Types
• Step 7 Conversations
• Intervention Conversations

Note:
• Understand what you are doing when you are having
a conversation (What do you want to achieve?)
Draw a house…
Minimum Spec:
• 2 Trees
• 2 Windows
• 2 People
• Driveway
• 1 Door
• Add anything else you like (Scenery, car, lake, etc.)
Safety Conversation
Intervention Conversation (Improve with Practice…)
• Observe Something (Look for Positives)
• Get their attention (At the right Moment)
• Relax Them (Introduce yourself ask some easy Qs)
• Ask about their task.
• Praise something (Tell Them)
• Correct Something, if need be (ASk them): Discuss the options - What can be done to
prevent it?
• Gain a commitment: Continues the good work… Fix any issue
• Verify that the commitment has been honored.
STEP 7 Conversations

• Starting Work is not Step # 1

• Put 6 Barriers in front of every task
• Verify Personnel are working Safely (as promised)
• Find out at the conversation and not at the
investigation
• Does not require any extra paper work

Each Supervisors are to have at least 1 STEP 7 Conversation every day

The Coaching Process
• Explain/Train

• Demonstrate (I do, you Watch)

• Practice (You do, I watch)

• Perform (You do)

A teacher tells you how it is done, a coach shows you how it is done…
