Bhagvat Gita Mahatmya (Glories) by Adi Shankaracharya
श्री आदिशंकराचार्य द्वारा वर्णित श्रीमद भगवद-गीता की महिमा।
1} gita-shastram idam punyam, yah pathet prayatah puman
vishnoh padam avapnoti, bhaya-shokadi-varjitah.
One who, with a regulated mind, recites with devotion this
Bhagavad-gita scripture which is the bestower of all virtue, will
attain to a holy abode such as Vaikuntha, the residence of Lord
Vishnu, which is always free from the mundane qualities based on
fear and lamentation.
2} gitadhyayana-shilasya, pranayama-parasya ca
naiva santi hi papani, purva-janma-kritani ca
If one reads Bhagavad-gita very sincerely and with all seriousness,
then by the grace of the Lord the reactions of his past misdeeds will
not act upon him.
3} maline mocanam pumsam, jala-snanam dine dine
sakrid gitamrita-snanam, samsara-mala-nashanam
One may cleanse himself daily by taking a bath in water, but if
one takes a bath even once in the sacred Ganges water of
Bhagavad-gita, for him the dirt of material life is altogether
vanquished.
1} गीता शास्त्रं इदं पुण्यं यः पठेत् प्रयतः पुमान् ।
विष्णोः पादं अवाप्नोति भय शोकादि वर्जितः ।।
भगवद्गीता दिव्य साहित्य है। जो इसे ध्यानपूर्वक पढ़ता है और इसके
उपदेशों का पालन करता है, वह भगवान् विष्णु का आश्रय प्राप्त करता
है जो कि समस्त भय तथा चिंताओं से मुक्त है
2} गीताध्ययनशीलस्य प्राणायामपरस्य च I
नैव सन्ति हि पापानि पूर्वजन्मकृ तानि च II
“यदि कोई भगवद्गीता को निष्ठा तथा गम्भीरता के साथ पढ़ता है तो भगवान् की
कृ पा से उसके सारे पूर्व दुष्कर्मों के फ़लों का उस पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता।
3} मलिनेमोचनं पुंसां जलस्नानं दिने दिने ।
सकृ द्गीतामृतस्नानं संसारमलनाशनम् ॥
“मनुष्य जल में स्नान करके नित्य अपने को स्वच्छ कर सकता है, लेकिन यदि
कोई भगवद्गीता-रूपी पवित्र गंगा-जल में एक बार भी स्नान कर ले तो वह
भौतिक जीवन (भवसागर) की मलिनता से सदा-सदा के लिए मुक्त हो जाता है
।”

4} gita su-gita kartavya, kim anyaih shastra-vistaraih
ya svayam padmanabhasya, mukha-padmad vinihsrita
Because Bhagavad-gita is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
one need not read any other Vedic literature. One need only attentively
and regularly hear and read Bhagavad-gita. In the present age, people are
so absorbed in mundane activities that it is not possible for them to read
all the Vedic literatures. But this is not necessary. This one book, Bhagavad-
gita, will suffice, because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and
especially because it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
5} bharatamrita-sarvasvam, vishnu-vaktrad vinihsritam
gita-gangodakam pitva, punar janma na vidyate
By drinking the Ganges waters of the Gita, the divine quintessence of the
Mahabharat emanating from the holy lotus mouth of Lord Vishnu, one will
never take rebirth in the material world again. In other words, by
devotionally reciting the Gita, the cycle of birth and death is terminated.
6} sarvopanishado gavo, dogdha gopala-nandanah
partho vatsah su-dhir bhokta, dugdham gitamritam mahat
All the Upanisads are like a cow, and the milker of the cow is Lord Shri
Krishna, the son of Nanda. Arjuna is the calf, the beautiful nectar of the
Gita is the milk, and the fortunate devotees of fine theistic intellect are the
drinkers and enjoyers of that milk.
4} गीता सुगीताकर्तव्या किमन्यौ: शास्त्रविस्तरैः ।
या स्वयं पद्मनाभस्य मुखपद्माद्विनिः सृता ॥
चूँकि भगवद्गीता भगवान् के मुख से निकली है, अतएव किसी अन्य वैदिक साहित्य को
पढ़ने की आवश्कता नहीं रहती । के वल भगवद्गीता का ही ध्यानपूर्वक तथा मनोयोग से
श्रवण तथा पठन करना चाहिए । के वल एक पुस्तक, भगवद्गीता, ही पर्याप्त है क्योंकि
यह समस्त वैदिक ग्रंथो का सार है और इसका प्रवचन भगवान् ने किया है।”
5} भारतामृतसर्वस्वं विष्णुवक्त्राद्विनिः सृतम ।
गीता- गङ्गोदकं पीत्वा पुनर्जन्म न विद्यते ॥
“जो गंगाजल पीता है, वह मुक्ति प्राप्त करता है । अतएव उसके लिए क्या कहा जाय
जो भगवद्गीता का अमृत पान करता हो? भगवद्गीता महाभारत का अमृत है औरइसे
भगवान् कृ ष्ण (मूल विष्णु) ने स्वयं सुनाया है ।”
6} सर्वोपनिषदो गावो दोग्धा गोपालनन्दनः ।
पार्थो वत्सः सुधिभोक्ता दुग्धं गीतामृतं महत् ।।
“यह गीतोपनीषद, भगवद्गीता, जो समस्त उपनिषदों का सार है, गाय के तुल्य है और
ग्वालबाल के रूप में विख्यात भगवान् कृ ष्ण इस गाय को दुह रहे है । अर्जुन बछड़े के
समान है, और सारे विद्वान् तथा शुद्ध भक्त भगवद्गीताके अमृतमय दूध का पान करने
वाले हैं ।”
7} ekam shastram devaki-putra-gitam
eko devo devaki-putra eva
eko mantras tasya namani yani
karmapy ekam tasya devasya seva
There need be only one holy scripture-the divine Gita
sung by Lord Shri Krishna: only one worshipable Lord-
Lord Shri Krishna: only one mantra-His holy names: and
only one duty-devotional service unto that Supreme
Worshipable Lord, Shri Krishna.
7} एकं शास्त्रं देवकीपुत्रगीतम् ।
एको देवो देवकीपुत्र एव ।।
एको मन्त्रस्तस्य नामानि यानि।
कर्माप्येकं तस्य देवस्य सेवा ।।
“आज के युग में लोग एक शास्त्र, एक ईश्र्वर, एक धर्म तथा एक वृति के लिए अत्यन्त
उत्सुक हैं। अतएव सारे विश्र्व के लिए के वल एक शास्त्र भगवद्गीता हो। सारे विश्र्व के
लिए एक इश्वर हो-देवकीपुत्र श्रीकृ ष्ण । एक मन्त्र, एक प्रार्थना हो- उनके नाम का
कीर्तन, हरे कृ ष्ण, हरे कृ ष्ण, कृ ष्ण कृ ष्ण, हरे हरे। हरे राम, हरे राम, राम राम, हरे
हरे। के वल एक ही कार्य हो – भगवान् की सेवा ।”
