    It is currently protected by different
    environmental regulations, it is a species
    considered critically endangered.
    “In 1998, Dr. Virginia Graue calculated the
    presence of 6,000 axolotls per square kilometer.
    I did an analysis in 2004 and found that there
    were 1,000. By 2008 I repeated the study and
    there were only 100 and in 2013 we only
    counted 36 per square kilometer, which means
    that its population is going down more or less as
    we had predicted”, says Luis Zambrano,
    founder of the Ecological Restoration
    Laboratory of the Institute of Biology of the
    National Autonomous University of Mexico
