Aims
- Solidify knowledge of mathematical functions,
- Explore their applications,
- Create an expandable knowledge base,
- Improve Research, Documenting and Team Working skills,
- Employ various ICT tools.
Function overview
1. A function is a rule that maps each x value to just one y value for a
defined set of input values.
2. Either one-one (e.g. linear) or many-one (e.g. quadratic) are functions.
3. Functions can be solved algebraically or by drawing graphs.

Quadratic
functions
Mathematical overview
1. A quadratic function is a function with the highest power of x 2 term.
2. It has the general formula of ax2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0.

a. From the graph, we can see that a quadratic

function is a many-one function. For two input
values of x (-3 and 2), there will be only one
output for y (0).

The graph of y = x2 + x - 6
General properties
- It has the shape of a parabola (U shape)
- When the coefficient of x2 is positive, the graph will open upward. When it is negative,
it will open downward.

The graph of y =x2 + x - 6 The graph of y=-x2 - x + 6

General properties
- - Quadratic functions can be divided into two symmetrical halves by the axis of
symmetry.
- - The vertex of the graph is usually the minimum or maximum point. For the positive
coefficient of x2, the vertex is the minimum point. For the negative one, it is the
maximum point.

The graph of y =x2 + x - 6 The graph of y=-x2 - x + 6

Graph
Special cases
No x - intercept

- This happens when for any input of x, the

output can’t be 0 (y<0 or y>0).
- This can easily be seen by completing the
square from the original equation. The
equation can be written as a(x + b)2 + c If both
a and c are positive, or both are negative,
the graph doesn’t have any x-intercept.

Graph of y = (x + 2)2 + 3
Special cases
No x - intercept

- This happens when for any input of x, the

output can’t be 0 (y<0 or y>0).
- This can easily be seen by completing the
square from the original equation. The
equation can be written as a(x + b)2 + c If both
a and c are positive, or both are negative,
the graph doesn’t have any x-intercept.

Graph of y = (x + 2)2 + 3
Special cases
Graph of y = x2 and y = -x2

- This means that the x-intercept and y-

intercept are both at the origin (0;0)
- The line of symmetry of the graph is the y-
axis
- Its vertex is also the origin

y = x2 y = - x2
Application
● In science: ● In construction:
We can draw a quadratic By drawing a quadratic graph, the
function graph to represent of architect can estimate a suitable
a ball that is thrown up. From pair of width and length of a
that, we can also represent house, so it will be easier to
gravity construct.
