WHAT IS NAVIGATION
• Navigation is the art of getting from
one place to another, safely and
effectively.
• It is the process of reading, and controlling
the movement of a craft or vehicle from one
place to another.
• The first record of boats large enough to
carry goods for trade is around 3500 B.C.
and from this, navigation comes in the
picture.
HISTORY OF
NAVIGATION
1) The first western civilization known to have
developed the art of NAVIGATION at sea where the
Phoenicians about 4,000 years ago.
2) Phoenician sailors accomplished
navigation by using primitive charts and
observation of the sun and stars to determine
direction.
INDIAN NAVIGATION
IN OCEAN
• The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) has been
accepted as a component of the World Wide Radio Navigation System
(WWRNS) for operation in the Indian Ocean Region by the International
Maritime Organization (IMO). This will enable merchant vessels to use
IRNSS for obtaining position information similar to GPS and GLONASS to
assist in the navigation of ships in ocean waters within the area covered by
50degree N latitude, 55degree E longitude, 5degree S latitude and
110degree E longitude (approximately up to 1500 km from Indian
boundary).
