Periodic Table Groups

Why do the names of elements in the periodic table
not always appear to make sense?
Some elements were known in the ancient times and they have carried over in the latin naems and
represent by the letters of there latin names but have a modern name. Right now on the periodic table
there are 11 elements represent on the periodic table by letters not in line with there name they are:
- Sodium (Na) - Potassium (K) - Antimony (Sb)
- Iron (Fe) - Copper (Cu) - Tungsten (W)
- Silver (Ag) - Tin (Sn) - Gold (Au)
- Mercury (Hg) - Lead (Pb)
GROUPS IN THE
PERIODIC TABLE
Alkali Metals
There are six alkali metals which is the first group in the periodic
table. It is the leftmost collum in the table. They are Lithium (Li),
Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Rubidium (Rb), Cesium (Cs), and
Francium (Fr). Like the other elements in the group for example
Hydrogen (H) has one electron in its outermost shell, however,
hydrogen is not classed as an alkali metal since it is not a metal but
a gas at room temperature. Alkali metals are called this way
because when they interact with water they turn into alkalis. They
are hydroxide compounds of these elements such as sodium
hydroxide. Alkali properties are they melt at low temperatures and

metals
Alkali Earth metals
Alkali earth metals are six chemicals in the second leftmost
group in the periodic table and they are part of group 2. The
elements include Beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg),
Calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), Barium (Ba), and radium
(Ra). The names of these elements go back to medieval
alchemy. The way they are formed atomically is they have 2
electrons in the outermost shell so they react readily, for
numerous compounds and are never found in nature but
made with other substances. Again they are alkali when Bell-Young, L. (2021, November 1). A level chemistry revision: Alkaline

Halogens
Halogen elements are the six elements in group 17 of the periodic
table. Group 17 occupies the second collum from the right on the
periodic table and consists of fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine
(Br), Iodine (I), Astatine (At), and Tennessine (Ts). Out of these
elements, Astatine and Tennessine are radioactive and have a short
life spam and are man-made. Halogens are very reactive and can
produce salts. Each halogen atom has 7 electrons in its outermost
shell. This implies that a halogen can receive an atom from a
different element. The reason these elements are called halogens is as
stated before they produce salt and the greek name for salt is halite,
the word comes from the roots hal which means salt and gen John, A. P. (2022, July 20). Atomic and physical properties of group 17

Noble Gases

Noble gases otherwise known as inert gases are the 7

elements that make up the rightmost group of the periodic
table otherwise known as group 18. These gases are
Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr),
Xenon (Xe), Radon (Rn), and Oganesson (Og). Noble
gases are colourless, Odourless, tasteless and
nonflammable. Their stable electonic configurations make
them unreactive hence why they are called Noble. Noble
gases are very usefull though and are used in fridges and
lamps because of there easily passing electric cuurent. Mal, S. (n.d.). Noble gases: Trends and patterns.
