MATERIALS AND THEIR

RELEVANCE IN
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Name: JEREMY IFEAGWU
Subject: BIOLOGY
• Presence of sunlight:- The job of sunlight in photosynthesis is to
provide energy. The sun releases energy in the form of heat and light.
During photosynthesis, plants trap light energy with their leaves and
use the energy of the sun to change water and carbon dioxide into a
sugar called glucose.
• Presence of chlorophyll:- Chlorophyll is a pigment found in the
chloroplast of plant cells. It gives plants their green colour. During
photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs light from the sun and turns it
into chemical energy.
• Carbon dioxide:- It act as an oxidizing agent that oxidizes water into
oxygen. The oxygen is taken from the air by the leaf cells. Thin leaves
of most plants allow gases to diffuse in and out quickly.
• Water:- Water is one of the reactants in photosynthesis, it provides
the hydrogen needed to form glucose (a hydrocarbon). During
photosynthesis, water is split liberating electrons and forming
molecular oxygen. These electrons are used to reduce carbon dioxide,
forming sugar.
