MEE 4004 Heat Exchangers

Homework 2
Homework 2
• An annealing furnace with an energy cost of 0.025 €/kWh is operated at 8600 hours per year. The inlet
temperature of the combustion air is 10°C. The operation cost is 0.025 €/kWh to cool the flue gas from the
annealing furnace at 600°C to 150°C. Management plans to purchase staggered arranged a cross-flow heat
exchanger with heat transfer surface area of 215 m 2, overall heat transfer coefficient of 0.025 kW/m 2K and
heat transfer surface area unit cost of 500 €/m 2. Longitudinal and transverse pitches are 35 mm and 30 mm,
respectively. Flue gas passes over the 25 mm outer diameter pipes with a maximum velocity of 15 m/s and
6.5 m3/s volume flow rate. Combustion air passes inside the 23 mm inner diameter 5 m long tube at an
average velocity of 7 m/s and with a volume flow rate of 7.27 m 3/s steadily from 2500 pipe. The number of
tubes in the longitudinal direction is 50. The electricity unit cost is 0.12 €/kWh. The heat capacities of the
flue gas and combustion air are determined as 3 kW/K and 6 kW/K, respectively, and the depreciation
coefficient is defined as 0.12 1/y.
• (ρair=0.8 kg/m3, ρflue=0.45 kg/m3, µair=270x10-7 Ns/m2, νflue gas=66.5x10-6 m2/s).
