CALCULATION OF HEAT EXCHANGER CELL

EFFECTIVENESS
CALCULATION OF RECUPERATOR CELL EFFECTIVENESS

• In order to obtain regional temperatures in the recuperator, it is necessary to

know the regional effects.
• In the recuperator, each cell is treated as a recuperator and the recuperator
becomes a circuit where 4 recuperators are connected to each other.
• After calculating the total heat transfer coefficient, the effectiveness of each cell
must be calculated.
• The important point to note here is that the effectiveness should be calculated
separately for the hot and cold flow.
• The efficiency for hot flow in cross flow, in other words for hot flow, is calculated
with the cell's operating characteristic equations (Incropera and DeWitt 2001).

CALCULATION OF RECUPERATOR CELL EFFECTIVENESS

• Number of transfer unit can ve calculated as below.

• After the calculation of Effectiveness for hot flow cold flow effectiveness is calculated using the following
equation.

• C, which is the ratio of heat capacities,

Example

Perform the static simulation of the heat exchanger for 4 cells and find the outlet
temperatures of the flows.
Example

• If the heat capacities are and ,

• Since the hot stream is modeled in 2 sections in the cell representation of the recuperator, the mass flow will
also be half of the total mass flow.
