The Necklace

Theme:
This short story has the theme of not being greedy in life as Mathilde has been. Mathilde's
greed for a better life leads her husband to get a ticket for an even where Mathilde purchases
a dress they cannot afford and borrows a necklace she believes to be worth thousands.

Point Of View:
- It is a story of a beautiful woman born to a non-wealthy family. Then she marries but
dreams of an affluent life. Unfortunately, these dreams of a different life eventually lead her
to downfall.

-It gave us lesson to always being grateful with what we have and what we afford. This story
also teach us to straightforward and being truthful with our mistake to people we have done.
Characterization:

- Mathilde Loisel
A person who does not want to be called poor. She want to look good in front of others. At
the saying goes, she is a person who does not know how to measure clothes on his own
body. But she also a responsible person when he tries to return the necklace that her friend
has lent her even she has lost it.

- Monsieur Loisel
A man who always support his wife. Try ti fulfill what his wife wants even though he lacks
ability. Together help his wife pay off the debt that has been borrowed. Always love his wife
no matter what.

- Jeanne Forestier
A friend who does not count in the chapter of lending something. A person who doesn't get
angry when she finds out her friend lost her necklace. Treat her friend well when her friend
is in trouble.
Plot:

Exposition statement:
The main character in this short story is about life of married couples, Mathilde and her
husband Monsieur Loisel. Mathilde is ungrateful person that feels unhappy in her married
life and keep compare her life with other person. Monsieur Loisel is Mathilde’s husband that
works as a clerk, but he always try fulfils Mathilde desires for make her happy. In this story,
the actions startes when they borrow the necklace from Madame Forestier to wear at the
event, but they have lose the necklace. They are scared to tell the truths to the owner and
they work hard to replace it. One day, Mathilde go to find the Madame Forestier to tell the
truths and give back the new necklace. But the cost of the necklace is not what they think
because the necklace that they lost is a fake one. If I could change the end of the story,
Mathilde and her husband could better tell the truths about losing the necklace to Madame
Forestier whether good or bad and even if the necklace was made of pure diamond, they
could make some arrangements to repay Madame Forestier for it on much easier terms
because honesty is the best policy.
Rising action:
The Necklace rising action starts when Monsieur Loisel brings an envelope with an
invitation. He worked hard so the boss could host it to him. Hoping to cheer her up, he gives
her a chance to attend a ball full of high society. However, Mathilde gets upset as she has
nothing to wear. She borrows jewelry from Madame Forestier. After all, they’re getting
ready to go to the ball.

Conflict:
Mathilde Loisel not wanting others to see them poor in the middle of many rich people. She
wanted to wear an expensive necklace for the party and told her husband to borrow from
Madame Forestier's jewels.

Climax:
Mathilde notices that the necklace is no longer around her neck and she doesn't notice when
the necklace is gone.
Falling action:
Madamme and Mr Loisel looked for a similar necklace and it costs 36000 francs. Mr Loisel
gathered 18000 and the other 18000 they gathered from borrowing money.They had to work
hard for the next 10 years in order to pay all the money they owed.

Resolution:
Finally after 10 years, the Loisels paid all the debts but Madame Loisel slowly lose her
youth and was no longer a pretty woman. After a long time, she saw Madame Forestier at the
park and told her the truth about the necklace. Madame Forestier told her that the necklace
was fake and worth 500 francs.
