THE UK ROYAL

FAMILY: TO
KEEP OR NOT
TO KEEP?
Introduction

The UK Royal Family is an integral part of the

nation's history and culture. With centuries of
tradition, they serve as a symbol of continuity,
stability, and national identity.
The institution has adapted over time, but its signi
cance remains intact. The monarchy preserves a
unique heritage, attracting tourists, boosting the
economy, and forging international relationships.
While the historical legacy is undeniable, maintaining
the Royal Family comes at a signi cant cost. The
taxpayer's burden to fund their lavish lifestyle can be
challenging to justify in an era of increasing social
inequality. Additionally, calls for modernization and
transparency have intensi ed, as some argue that the
monarchy should re ect contemporary values and
embrace a more democratic approach.
In favour : TOURISM

The Royal Family attracts millions of tourists to the

UK, boosting the economy and supporting local
businesses. Their ceremonial duties, such as the
Changing of the Guard and royal weddings,
generate signi cant public interest and media
coverage.
In favour:CULTURE

The monarchy acts as a living museum, preserving

and promoting the country's rich historical and
cultural heritage. The traditions, rituals, and iconic
landmarks associated with the Royal Family
contribute to national pride and unity.
In favour:SOFT POWER

The monarchy's international presence grants the UK

a unique diplomatic advantage. The royal visits, state
banquets, and global charity work serve as avenues
for building and maintaining relationships with other
countries, bene ting trade, politics, and global in
uence.
IN FAVOUR OF ABOLISHING THE
MONARCHY: REPUBLICALISM
The concept of hereditary monarchy con icts with
democratic values and principles of equality. Some
argue that positions of power and in uence should
be earned based on merit and the ability to serve
the public rather than being determined by
birthright.
IN FAVOUR OF ABOLISHING THE
MONARCHY: TRANsPARENCY
Calls for reform center around modernizing the
monarchy to align with contemporary values. Greater
transparency in nancial matters, reducing the
reliance on public funding, and increased
accountability are necessary steps to maintain public
trust and support.
PUBLIC OPINION

A survey by the National Centre for Social Research

(NatCen) shows public support for the monarchy has
fallen to a historic low. A total of 45% of respondents
said either it should be abolished, was not at all
important or not very important.
CONCLUSION
The results from the analysis give insights into public
opinion that suggest necessary reforms in order to
ensure the continued relevance of the Royal Family.
The data highlights the fact that anything short of
drastic changes in policies will result in its
diminishing relevance in the country.

For the Royal Family to remain relevant, it needs to

take initiatives to satisfy the demands of its citizens
and bridge the gaps between the public and itself.
