Still life
Ang Kiukok drove home to the
point that there’s more to
life than meets the eye. The
principle of modern painting
is allegiance to the two -
dimensional quality of the
pictorial surface.
Foreground and background
meld. While line, form,
color, and texture take
precedence over figurative
veridicality. Ang kiukok
imposed a magisterial
appropriacy over every busy
detail, boldly using
repetitions and variations of
triangles, rectangles and
circles to hold a precarious
balance in place.

Filipina: A Racial
Identity Crisis
Done in acrylic on handwoven
cloth and embellished with
dyed yarn, beads, and gold
thread. It focuses on two
women, the austere Maria
Isabel Lopez who is mestiza
and the earthy Liwayway
Etnika who is kayumangqi.
Together they represent the
opposing racial strains that
make the modern-day
Filipina unique and confused
about who she is behind the
skin color. The painting is
considered Abad's greatest
work on canvas.

PLANTING
RICE

The painting features farmers

set on a rice field, regardless
of their gender, they are all
together working under a
bright sunny day. Due to the
usage of nature and pastel
colors the painting gives off a
light visual weight, an irony
to the heavy toil and labor
that rice planting entails.
Depicts how enduring they
are and how the farmers work
together.

Ang Kiukok fish

Ang Kiukok’s fish are singled

out on the plate. The artist
draws out their spiky
aspect, their bony frames,
predatory teeth, sharp fins
and tails. They do not offer
a visually edible meal but
have the satisfaction of
glaring out at the diner
before being torn to pieces
with a knife and fork.
