ABSTRACT
Background/Objectives: Drowsiness of driver is the main cause of accidents in the world
as well as in Pakistan. The aim is to create a framework to keep the vehicle safe and secure
through critical activity. Findings: Feeling sleepy while driving could cause hazardous
traffic accident. However, when driving alone on highway or driving over a long period of
time, drivers are inclined to feel bored and sleepy, or even fall asleep. Nowadays most of
the products of driver anti-sleep detection sold in the market are simply earphone making
intermittent noises, which is quite annoying and inefficient. Application/Improvement:
As such, there is a high demand for cheap and efficient driver sleep detection. Therefore,
we came up with an idea and successfully developed a sleepy detection and alarming
system, which could effectively meet this demand.

INTRODUCTION

• Millions of vehicles are being produced annually.

• The accident rates are also getting significantly increased.
• Every second waiting for the medical help can cost the victims their life.
• Self automated electronic system will be more reliable.
• Accidents are caused yearlong due to various factors such as drunk driving.
texting while driving, speeding, distractions, sleeping on the wheel, etc.
• Road accidents became a matter of concern due to the huge increase in
traffic. The primary cause of accidents is due to the drowsiness of drivers in
the nighttime. Fatigue and drowsiness are some of the leading causes of
major accidents on Highways. The only solution to this problem is detecting
the drowsiness and alerting the driver.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Traffic accidents are serious global problems.

• Road traffic injuries and deaths have a terrible impact on individuals ,
communities and countries.
• About 1.24 million people die each year as result of road traffic crashes.
• During the transportation of cargo and heavy materials over long distances
(especially during night time) through trucks, the effects of inadequate sleep
proves to be a major problem for these vehicle drivers involved in continuous
driving, leading to fatal accidents.
• According to a 2014 Traffic Safety Foundation study, it was found that 37%
of drivers fell asleep during driving . Out of the 21% of fatal crashes, 13%
caused severe injury – all due to a drowsy driver who has to continuously drive
for long time periods and at the same time, have an eye on the road.

AIMS

The aim of using an eye blink sensor in accident control is to enhance safety on the roads and
reduce the number of accidents caused by driver fatigue or drowsiness. The goal is to detect
the driver's level of fatigue or drowsiness by monitoring their eye blink rate and alert them to
take a break or rest before continuing to drive.

OBJECTIVES

1. To Design a prototype drowsiness detection system. The focus is on designing a system

that will accurately monitor the open and close state of driver’s eyes in real time.
2. To Develop a reliable and accurate eye blink sensor system for diagnosing and
controlling speed of vehicles to prevent accident.
3. To Implement all vehicles with automatic safety system that provide driver high level of
protection.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

HARDWARE REQUIRED SOFTWARE REQUIRED

• ARDUINO UNO ARDUINO IDE

• EYEBLINK SENSOR
• SWITCH
• BUZZER
• 9V BATTERY

12
WORKING PRINCIPLE

• The eye-blink sensor illuminates the eye with

infrared light, monitoring the changes in the
reflected light.
• The sensor output is active high for Eye close
and can be given directly to microcontroller
for interfacing applications.
• When this output remains high for a specific
time period say10 sec, the driver is taken to be
asleep.
• Consequently a buzzer is activated in order to
wake the driver.
• The motor of the vehicle is slowed down
through a relay switch so as to prevent
impending accident.
13
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

If the drivers eyes are closed cumulatively more than a standard value, the
system draws the conclusion that the driver is falling asleep, and then it will
activate an alarm sound to alert the driver.
This system alerts the user if he/she falls asleep at the wheel thereby, avoiding
accidents and saving lives. This system is useful especially for people who travel
long distances and people who are driving late at night

CONCLUSION

 The purpose of the drowsiness detection system is to aid in the

prevention of accidents passenger and commercial vehicles.
The system will detect the early symptoms of drowsiness before
the driver has fully lost all attentiveness and warn the driver that
they are no longer capable of operating the vehicle safely.
