Mobile computing Definition

Mobile computing is technology that allows

transmission of data, voice, and video, via a computer or any other

wireless enabled devices without having connected to a fixed physical

link.
Types of wirless communication technologies used in mobile

 IRDA

 Bluetooth

 Wi-Fi

 NFC
IRDA (Infrared data association)

 IRDA is a wireless communication with infrared light.

 Many laptops sold today are equipped with an IRDA compatible transceiver

that enables communication with other devices such as printers, modems or

other laptops.

 The transfer speed ranges from 2400bps to 4Mbps.

 IRDA is the same technology used to control a TV set with a remote control.

 The maximum effective distance is somewhat under 1.5 miles.

BLUETOOTH

 Bluetooth is a wireless LAN technology that connects devices in a small area.

 Compared to infrared,Bluetooth devices can work together (omni directional).

 Current devices can transfer in the range of 30 feet.

 Bluetooth uses radio frequency and hence

transmission is possible through walls.

 These devices communicate with each other irrespective of the manufacture.

 Bluetooth devices cannot be connected with more than one devices at a time.

 Bluetooth has a low data rate in comparision to infrared.

Wi-Fi

 Wi-Fi means Wireless fidelity.

 Wi-Fi is a technology that uses radio waves to provide network connectivity.

 Wireless networking is known as WiFi or 802.11 networking as it covers the IEEE

802.11 technologies.

HOTSPOTS

The term hotspots is used to define an area where WiFi access is available.

In order to access hotspots, our computer should include a wireless adapter.

NFC(Near field communication)

 NFC is one of the latest wireless communication technology, as a short-range

wireless connectivity technology.

 NFC offers safe but simple communication between electronic devices.

 With NFC technology, communication occurs when an NFC compatible devices is

brought within a few centimeters(10cm or less) of another NFC devices.

 With just a point or a touch, NFC enables effortless

use of the devices and gadgets we use daily.

 NFC technology is currently mainly aimed at being used with mobile phones.
