INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN VOLUME AND PRESSURE OF
GASES AT CONSTANT TEMPERATURE

• The relationship between the volume and pressure of gases at constant temperature was
first stated by Robert boyle during the 16th century. He performed an experiment
wherein he trapped a fixed amount of air in the j-tube, he change the pressure and
controlled and control the temperature and then, he observed its effect to the volume of
the air inside the j-tube. He found out that as the pressure is increased,the volume
decreases. He finally concluded that the volume of a fixed amount of gas is inversely
proportional to its pressure at constant temperature
ROBERT A. BOYLE
Robert Boyle FRS was an Anglo-Irish
natural philosopher, chemist, physicist,
alchemist and inventor. Boyle is largely
regarded today as the first modern
chemist, and therefore one of the
founders of modern chemistry, and one
of the pioneers of modern experimental
scientific method.
Robert Boyle, a famous English chemist, discovered
in 1662 that if you pushed on a gas, its volume
would decrease proportionately. For example, if you
doubled the pressure on a gas (increase the pressure
two times), its volume would decrease by half
(decrease the volume two times).
PRESSURE
• Boyle's law is a gas law which states that the pressure exerted by a gas (of a given mass,
kept at a constant temperature) is inversely proportional to the volume occupied by it.
•  pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse relationship. If volume increases, then
pressure decreases and vice versa, when the temperature is held constant.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
PRESSURE AND VOLUME
• PRESSURE AND VOLUME IS INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL
• AS THE PRESSURE INCREASES THE VOLUME DECREASES AND LIKEWISE, AS
THE VOLUME INCREASES THE PRESSURE DECREASES.
TO UNDERSTAND IT MORE I WILL GOING TO
DEMONSTRATE IT IN FRONT OF YOU ALL
Q1. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE VOLUME OF
SYRINGE AS THE SET OF WEIGHTS IS ADDED ON
TOP OF IT?
Q2. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PRESSURE ON THE
SYRINGE WHENT THE SET OF WEIGHTS IS ADDED?

• It will push the plunger downwards; in other words, the air in the syringe is compressed.
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
VOLUME AND PRESSURE OF GASES AT
CONSTANT TEMPERATURE?
BOYLE’S LAW EQUATION
LETS TRY SOLVING THIS PROBLEM
USING THE BOYLE’S LAW EQUATION
1. A 2.5 liter container has a gas pressure of 4.6 atm. If volume is decresed to 1.6L, what will
be the new pressure inside the container?

V1= 2.5 L
P1= 4.6 atm
V2= 1.6 L
P2 = ?
THE VOLUME WAS DECREASED BY 1.6 L
AND WE ARE FINDING A NEW PRESSURE
(4.6 atm) (2.5L) = p2 (1.6 l)

To solve the P2 we have to divide both sides by 1.6

11.5 / 1.6 = 1.6/ 1.6

Therefore the P2 Is equal to 7.19 atm

• V1 = 2.5 l
• P1 = 4.6 atm
• V2 = 1.6 L
• P2 = 7.19 atm
ANOTHER EXAMPLE HERE;
WE ARE FINDING THE V2

• P1 = 855mm Hg (855mm Hg) (425 ml) = 363, 375

• V1 = 425 ml 363,375 / 759

• P2 = 759 mm Hg 478.75 ml = V2
• V2 = 478.75 ml
